City of New York Planning Intern - TPM in New York, New York

Job Description

The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.

TPM seeks an enthusiastic and motivated Planning Intern to support special projects. The selected student will assist efforts to reconnect communities along highways and arterials, including but not limited to Conduit Avenue and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway corridor in Brooklyn. They will also support work related to the agency’s NYC Streets Plan and Curb Management Action Plan. Responsibilities will include qualitative and quantitative research related to ongoing projects and synthesis of findings into succinct formats for review and incorporation into projects. The Planning Intern will also support project planning and implementation and the develop presentation materials for internal and external audiences to communicate project context and milestones. The Planning Intern will have an opportunity to be introduced to transportation planning, project initiation, project management, and strategic communication and gain deeper understanding of NYC DOT concepts through project-related site visits. The ideal student is detail oriented, accurate, and motivated to work collaboratively to develop impactful public plans and programs.

Preferred Skills

Strong communication skills (oral and written) and analytical skills; qualitative and quantitative research; technical and public-facing writing; interest working with New York City agencies and/or community groups; interest in the fields of city planning and/or transportation; experience with the Microsoft Office Suite including Excel; interest in developing project management and strategic communication skills.

Hours/Shift: 17 hours/week during school, 35 hours/week when on break

Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.

For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE

Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
