We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.Position Summary:Reporting to the Director of Principal Gifts Operations, the Philanthropic Communications Writer will be responsible for crafting tailored communications and fundraising materials to engage donors and prospects capable of investing $5M+ in NRDC's work. This includes producing high-level summaries of NRDC programs and priorities; writing personalized emails for senior NRDC leaders to send to top donors and prospects with institutional or programmatic updates; and compiling talking points for donor meetings. The writer will also support the Principal Gifts team in developing in-depth concept notes and proposals, budget narratives, as well as confidential donor briefs and contact reports.Responsibilities- Collaborate with the Director of Principal Gifts Operations and relevant portfolio managers and program staff to write tailored email communications for senior NRDC leaders to send to top donors and prospects regarding NRDC's work, as well as talking points for in-person donor meetings.- Support the Principal Gifts team in producing concept notes, proposals, budget narratives, and internal/confidential donor briefs and contact reports.- Collaborate with Development and NRDC Action Fund staff to develop effective fundraising materials to raise non-deductible 501(c)4 funding.- Maintain a working knowledge of NRDC's issues and programmatic work, as well as the interests of the organization's principal donors and key prospects.- Ensure that all messaging aligns with donor engagement strategy.- Other duties as assigned.Qualifications- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience required.- 5-7 years of experience as a writer in a high-volume nonprofitDevelopment department.- Superior writing and editing skills; demonstrated ability to quickly synthesize complex information into simple, compelling, donor-centric messaging.- Familiarity with climate, conservation, or related environmental issues preferred.- High level of discretion in managing confidential donor information.- Effective and unflappable in a fast-paced environment; eager to contribute to the collaborative dynamic of the department.- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.- Collegial team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills, and able to interact effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies including institutional leadership.- Flexibility, responsiveness, and ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments and deadlines.- Donor database experience preferred, ideally Salesforce.- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential.NRDC is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, both in our work and in our workplace. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position, the salary range is $100,000 to $107,000. *Our offices are open and we are operating in a hybrid model.
