Touro University Paralegal & Compliance Investigator in New York, New York

Overview

This position is responsible for office operations and other compliance activities of the Departments. This individual understands the departments’ operational goals and works to implement them with various team members. Areas of office management responsibility include front office administration, mail and production services, file management, and administrative support covering a wide range of services. This position also requires a high level of initiative, the ability to multi-task and work independently, customer-service skills, as well as demonstrated skills in managing litigation. This individual will support regulatory compliance activities at Touro University (University or Institution) including, but not limited to, compliance efforts with regard to Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) as amended by the Violence Against Women Act and the Campus SaVE Act, New York State 129-A and B amongst other regulatory and compliance needs of the University system as they may arise. The ideal candidate will have advanced document management and case organization skills, an excellent attention to detail and the ability to multitask and handle a wide range of matters. Strong knowledge of legal research, e-discovery and excellent computer literacy required. This individual shall report directly to the Associate General Counsel and Director of Regulatory Compliance.

Responsibilities

Paralegal: Assists in the delivery of legal and compliance services, including but not limited to:

  • Manages all day-to-day activities of the Department including setting up appointments, providing general administrative and clerical support, coordinating travel arrangements, ordering office supplies.

  • Prepares legal papers, letters and forms relating to various legal matters

  • Processes all purchase orders and invoices for Department and assist in keeping the department in line with budget.

  • Creates and maintains files, databases and spreadsheets.

  • Investigates the facts and circumstances of compliance complaints, primarily through internal contacts and resources to chronicle events and report possible solutions.

  • Maintains forms required by local, state and federal agencies

  • Research information relating to cases, for court documents, and Lexis-Nexis for other legal materials (cases, articles, etc.).

  • Respond to inquiries displaying a comprehensive knowledge of the department's policies and procedures.

Compliance Investigator:

  • Analyze employment-related and student-related complaints.

  • Conduct inquiries and prepare questions for investigation interviews.

  • Evaluate all investigation material submitted and request any other documentary evidence that the investigator deems relevant to the allegations.

  • Interviews all relevant parties.

  • Assist with the coordination of the University’s compliance with all relevant regulations and requirements including the development, implementation, and monitoring of appropriate policies, procedures and practices designed to comply with federal and state legislation, regulation, and case law.

  • Provide technical assistance for Title IX initiatives across the University System including consulting with relevant offices, departments groups and senior personnel for the purpose of advising, clarifying and identifying necessary action to eliminate sex-based and/or gender-based discrimination in all educational programs and activities.

  • Collaborate with a wide range of University administrators, staff, and faculty to increase awareness of the importance of compliance at the University and to effectuate the compliance program.

  • Conduct trainings on a variety of compliance-related topics.

  • Any other duties deemed appropriate by the department staff.

Qualifications

Education/ Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or Paralegal certificate.

  • At least 1-3 years of relevant work experience.

  • Prior Title IX experience preferred

  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task and work under deadlines.

  • Able to adapt to evolving responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with high stress situations.

  • Open to communication, and willing to accept feedback.

  • Exceptional communication and language skills, both oral and written; can write in a clear and concise fashion.

  • A high degree of interpersonal competency: the ability to work well with a diverse group of students, volunteers, staff, consultants, board members and faculty; communicates effectively; communicates directly to other project team members.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point, & Outlook.

  • Clearly demonstrates planning and project management execution skills within boundaries of technology.

Travel

  • Possible travel to extension sites as needed.

Physical Demands

  • Extensive use of computers.

  • Extensive time sitting and standing.

  • Able to lift up to 5 lbs.

  • Occasional weekend work.

Maximum Salary

USD $70,000.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary

USD $56,000.00/Yr.
