New York University Junior Research Scientist (Research Assistant) in Psychology/Behavioral Science in New York, New York

The NYU Stern Marketing Department seeks a highly skilled and motivated individual for a full-time Research Scientist position for a period of one year (with the possibility of renewal).

The Research Scientist will work primarily with ProfessorJoshua Lewis (http://www.joshua-lewis.net) at NYU Stern’s Marketing Department. The research projects are focused on moral psychology and judgment and decision-making in contexts of large consequence for people’s well-being, designed to inform the effective altruism (https://www.effectivealtruism.org/articles/introduction-to-effective-altruism) movement. At least 90% of time will be spent on research, with the remaining time spent on other assigned responsibilities. The topics include:

● Judgments and decisions about global catastrophic risk from artificial intelligence, pandemics, etc.

● The psychology of dangerous actors that could cause large-scale harm, such as malevolent individuals or fanatical and extremist ideological groups

● Biases that prevent choosing the most effective options for improving societal well-being, including obstacles to an expanded moral circle

The research projects utilize primarily experimental methods, including randomized surveys with self-report measures and behavioral measures such as link clinks, donations, or choices between lotteries. We also conduct field studies in world contexts or recruit special samples of interest (e.g., policymakers, judges). We use primarily samples from the USA and UK but also do cross-cultural research with samples from Asia, Africa, and South America.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

● Literature research, summaries

● Conducting and reporting analyses for survey experiments

● Setting up studies on Qualtrics

● Helping to review and improve book chapters and papers

● Writing up study results

● Communications tasks

● Other assigned duties

This position should be a very good launchpad for a career in academia or in effective altruism-adjacent non-profits, ideal for somebody considering a PhD in social sciences. You will be exposed to all aspects of the research process from conceptualizing, to running and analyzing studies, to writing and publishing.

NYU offers a competitive salary and full-time employee benefits, including health insurance and time off. The Research Scientist will start as soon as is mutually convenient after an offer is accepted (we hope a successful applicant will start within two months of our decision).

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $50,440-$60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

The ideal candidate will have the following (but these are not prerequisites):

● At least one year of relevant research experience (including that gained in school)

● Proficiency in R or Stata

The candidate is required to have: A bachelor's degree or higher in a field relevant to the research (e.g. Economics, Psychology, Behavioral Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, etc.)
