THE OPPORTUNITY

This opportunity to join the Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at the rank of an Instructor in Heart Failure Transplant is clinically and academically unique. Columbia University Irving Medical Center, one of the nation's foremost academic health science centers, contains one of the nation's largest heart centers for children. The Department of Pediatrics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is the top in comparison with other pediatrics department in the NY region in NIH research funding.

Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC)/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York is now accepting applications for advanced fellowship training in pediatric heart failure/transplantation/MCS for the 2025-2026 academic year. Applicants who will have completed their general pediatric cardiology fellowship training at an accredited ACGME institution prior to the start date of July 1, 2025 will be considered. The heart failure/transplant program at CUMC/MSCHONY consists of six heart failure transplant cardiologists directed by Dr. Marc Richmond, four cardiac surgeons led by Dr. Emile Bacha, and a multi-disciplinary team that includes five nurse practitioners, two pharmacists, two social workers and nurse transplant and VAD coordinators.

Begun in 1984, our transplant program has performed transplant in over 600 patients and currently averages approximately 25-30 transplants annually. In addition, we have an established MCS program led by Dr. Sabrina Law, offering the full complement of temporary and durable devices including Syncardia Total Artificial Heart. The program has recently provided MCS to approximately 15 patients per year, including bridge-to-transplant in complex CHD patients and destination VAD therapy. A close relationship with our surgical colleagues and adult VAD specialists offers a unique experience for novel approaches to VAD use. Our program consists of an established cardio-genetics clinic under the supervision of Dr. Teresa Lee, as well as multidisciplinary clinic for cardio-oncology and advanced Fontan care; our center is an HCMA Center of Excellence for the care of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We have strong collaboration with our colleagues in ACHD and cardiomyopathy, heart failure and transplantation, participating in joint clinical conference and other opportunities.

The advance fellowship position will include clinical responsibilities for in-patients before and after transplantation, participation in the listing process and discussions, participation in donor offer acceptance and surgical planning, acute ICU and immunosuppression management of post-transplant patients, as well as heart failure consultation. It will also include participation in post-transplant and cardiomyopathy clinics, as well as clinical or basic science research projects. CUMC is an active participant in PHTS, ACTION as well as numerous other clinical registries and multicenter clinical trials, affording plenty of opportunity for research collaborations.
