Job Description

Editor, Global News (New York, Day) (Senior Staff Editor)

The New York Times is seeking an innovative Global News editor who will assign, edit and refine the daily International report. With an eye on breaking news and evolving storylines, the ideal candidate will have experience fleshing out the missing holes in the report and be unafraid to keep the overall report sharp, while also overseeing handoffs. We’re looking for a leader who understands that journalistic excellence and digital excellence are one and the same, and thinks deeply about the best form and format a story needs to have the most impact. The ideal candidate will constantly think about how to bring more people into our coverage and how we make our journalism more accessible.

What you’ll do:

  • Work closely with desk leaders and editors in all three newsrooms as well as teams such as Live and Audience to lead the global report in the moment and plan for the days that follow.

  • Elevate effective headlines and clear writing across the entire report.

  • Champion the best way to tell the stories coming across our desks, creatively evaluating forms and formats.

  • Push strong promotion of stories on the homepage and other core Times platforms.

  • Identify and respond quickly to breaking news.

  • Handle edits of all sorts, including first edits and write-throughs.

  • Assign edits to fellow staffers and monitor copy flow to the print hub on deadline.

  • Identify potential stories and anticipate coverage needs, communicating plans quickly and clearly.

  • Be flexible and nimble in anticipating potential problems, addressing unexpected issues and finding solutions.

  • Assist the weekend editor in preparing our weekend report.

Basic qualifications:

  • 5-10 years of experience writing and editing copy for news and enterprise, compelling headlines and captions, other display type and social copy

  • Experience and ability to multitask under deadline pressure

  • At least 3 years of experience thinking about multiple story forms and formats

  • Excellent news judgment

Preferred qualifications:

  • Has experience collaborating with visual journalists on news and enterprise

  • Ability to quickly pick up new topics

  • A willingness to be nimble and flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve

  • Professional judgment with respect to confidentiality

  • Being knowledgeable about Times style and applying it properly in different content types

All of the positions above are Guild Group O Senior Staff Editor jobs and may include night and weekend work

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $120,126.82 - $150,000.00.
