The Global Risk & Compliance Organization (“GRC”) is an independent risk management function, led by the Chief Risk Officer, with the objective of ensuring that American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner within all applicable regulatory expectations. GRC creates and maintains the overall risk management framework, performs independent risk management assessments, and monitors applicable risks.

By partnering closely with business units across the enterprise, we help deliver maximum value to our shareholders and our customers through effective risk management and oversight activities.

Enterprise Data Risk Management, within GRC, is the independent risk management function covering risk of financial loss, reputational damage, or regulatory or legal action resulting from inadequate data governance and/or data management practices adversely impacting the accuracy, timeliness, comprehensiveness, or usability of data within or throughout its lifecycle. Enterprise Data Risk Management is hiring a Director who will play a pivotal role in supporting the development of the comprehensive data risk management strategy to safeguard our organization's data assets and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of the strategic vision of Data Risk Management, aligning with the company's overall data risk management practices on data usability, data protection, data compliance, and third-party data.

  • Support development and maintenance of the Data Risk Appetite for the enterprise including definition and scope of the Risk Appetite Statement, and corresponding metrics with risk limits, tolerances, and escalations.

  • Enforce Enterprise Data Risk Management policies and procedures in alignment with industry regulations and global standards.

  • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify and evaluate potential data risks, providing strategic recommendations for risk mitigation.

  • Lead independent risk assessments and challenge the design and effectiveness of controls with a willingness to conduct hands-on analysis and assessments.

  • Partner with teams across Legal, Compliance, Privacy, Information Technology, Information Security, Enterprise Data Governance, and business units to implement effective data risk mitigation strategies.

  • Assess and manage data-related risks associated with third-party vendors, ensuring robust due diligence and compliance with financial industry regulations.

Qualifications:

Experience/Skills:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in data governance, risk management, 3rd party risk management, Information Technology, Information security, Data Privacy, or a related field within the financial services industry

  • Strong knowledge of data governance, data compliance, and data-related issue management in large, financial services firms

  • Experience in building / supporting Enterprise Data Quality programs

  • Familiarity with all aspects of the data lifecycle

  • Exceptional leadership skills including the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at the executive level.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to explain complex problems and ideas clearly and succinctly to senior management.

  • Able to effectively manage multiple, and often conflicting priorities, under tight timeframes and adapt to frequent change

  • Ability to work independently and across a matrix organization, excellent relationship building skills and ability to influence partners.

  • Highly organized with attention to detail, sense of follow-through, and accountability

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree a plus

Qualifications

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
