Role & Responsibilities:
The Advertising, Marketing & Customer Experience Team of the General Counsel’s Organization at American Express is seeking a Director & Counsel to provide legal and strategic support on advertising and marketing law issues. This position will report to a Senior Counsel.
Here’s just some of what you’ll do in this role:
Advise on marketing initiatives and content across American Express lines of business, including the Consumer, Business, Corporate, and Global Merchant & Network Services groups.
Partner closely with marketing teams to help them manage legal risk and deliver on their mission to deploy compelling marketing and provide innovative and valuable offers, benefits and experiences to current and prospective Card Members and customers.
Be a key member and leader within the GCO Marketing Center of Excellence (“COE”), which serves as a centralized team of experts to advise on marketing initiatives and content with nuanced, risk-based analysis, creative problem solving, agility, consistency, a deep understanding of a wide range of American Express products and services, and a passion for compelling advertising content.
Help maintain and establish norms and processes to enable and support colleagues within the COE, including in areas related to training, information sharing, development/growth, rotation models and soliciting partner feedback
Serve as an advisor to GCO colleagues and marketing teams on complex and novel advertising initiatives, including the marketing of new and refreshed benefits, products, offers and promotions, native advertising, endorsements and testimonials, and claim substantiation
Support special projects that require subject matter expertise in the area of marketing law
Help develop and advise on internal marketing guidelines and marketing review processes; provide training and continuing education for the COE and the broader GCO in these areas
Review and counsel on advertising campaigns across all media, including social media, affiliate marketing and influencer channels
Draft and revise marketing claims, disclosures and other customer communications
Collaborate with colleagues across the General Counsel’s Organization and other groups, like Privacy and Compliance
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
J.D. with admission to practice law in the United States; admission to the New York and/or Florida Bar in good standing or eligibility to do so is preferred
5 years of work experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment
Experience advising marketing teams, including the review of advertising content and customer offers
Knowledge of advertising and marketing laws (specifically FTC regulations and guidelines) and experience with their practical application to marketing content (native advertising, offers, claims, etc.)
Passion for working towards creative, solution-oriented outcomes that effectively address legal requirements
Experience in and passion for leading teams and talent development
Passion for developing a deep understanding of business needs and objectives with a close partnership with business clients
Strong communication skills with ability to convey advice clearly and synthesize complex issues
Must work well in cross-functional team settings Demonstrated experience in gaining credibility, managing expectations, and developing strong working relationships with legal colleagues and clients
Strong interest in advertising and customer experience
Preferred qualifications:
Knowledge of advertising laws, including FTC guidelines, state UDAP laws, and CFPB UDAAP principles
Experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating various types of marketing, sponsorship and partnership agreements

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
