Organization Overview: The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) are well-established Manhattan community-based agencies that support services to approximately 30,000 New Yorkers. We are two of New York City’s leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children, youth and families, homeless individuals, and older adults through-out Manhattan and New York City. The Isaacs Center focuses primarily on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers. Program Description:Goddard Riverside is a well-established Manhattan community-based agency with an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million. Goddard Riverside is one of New York City’s leading human service organizations meeting the basic needs of children, youth and families, homeless people, and older adults across Manhattan and New York City.

Position Summary:The primary function of the Activity Specialist is to plan group activities that provide a safe and engaging learning environment to the participants of the Stanley M. Isaacs Beacon program. The program is delivered through a comprehensive menu of services, including project-based learning that integrate education enrichment, visual arts, clubs, trips, and sports.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, September 16, 2024 – June 13, 2025 (some holidays, evening and Saturdays) 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm (Hours may vary) 17-20 hours per week

Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

  • Demonstrate professionalism & leadership.

  • Encourage creativity and self-expression among students through dance.

  • Teach various dance styles with a focus on NY Style Salsa, Bachata, Hip-Hop, and Jazz.

  • Assisting organization and preparation for dance parties, showcases, and dancing with/teaching students at events.

  • Maintain sound supervision and ensure the safety of program participants at all times.

  • Display or provide an opportunity to exhibit children’s work.

  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Program Director.

  • Inform the supervisor of any noteworthy incidents occurring during program time.

  • Ensure all children are picked up by appropriate adults on their contact sheet.

  • Attend staff training, weekly meetings, case conferences, and supervision meetings.

  • Submit weekly lesson plans and schedules.

  • Other duties as required and assigned by Program Director, ADED and/or DED.

  • Work with children on developmental and emotional issues; encourage program participation and social skills development.

  • Enforce program rules, identify & respond to participant behavior issues, and carry out corrective action when needed by identifying and seeking to resolve conflicts and behavioral problems.

  • Know and enforce ALL emergency procedures and follow all safety guidelines associated with all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your children’s safety and their whereabouts at all times.

  • Supervise youth and participate in all activities by building positive relationships with youth and peers, serving as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, behavior and the organization’s mission, philosophy, and goals.

  • Organize and participate in recitals, performances, dance competitions, and other events to showcase student progress.

    Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Minimum Associate's degree in a related field or two years of experience working with students (elementary or middle-school aged) required.

  • Must have experience teaching dance to children in a school or after-school setting.

  • Prior performance experience and stage/theater etiquette and understanding.

  • Must be knowledgeable and have prior experience successfully teaching one or more dance styles instructing youth dance routines and performances.

  • Engage youth in the following areas through the arts: critical thinking, rehearsals, hands-on project-based learning, documentation of work, community-building and activism.

  • Must have ability to work collaboratively with Group Leaders.

  • Must have passion for the mission and demonstrate interest in the field of education and youth development.

  • Must have a sense of humor, positive demeanor and a passion for youth development.

  • Must be able to pass background check including a Fingerprint Screen, Sex Offender Registry and be physically able to work with children (via a doctor’s signed consent including TB screening).

  • CPR/First Aid Certification a plus.

  • Fostering a learning environment that stimulates children's creative growth, social skills and development through dance routines and movement activities.

  • Demonstrate professionalism & leadership to be a team member of a group of staff and a group of 15-25 youth in grades K-8.

  • Working and actively engaging with children with developmental and emotional issues.

  • Assist in planning and leading activities and events.

    Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Must be able to create and follow curriculum.

  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!

  • Create and able to implement plans for group participation.

  • Effectively supervise children.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.

    Physical Requirements

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, walking

  • Must be able to carry 50lbs or more

    Working Conditions

  • MTA travel throughout the city and for recreational trips with youth

  • Outdoors/Indoors

  • Alternate between standing and sitting
