Job Description

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is a world leader in working creatively and effectively engaging with people under court-mandated community supervision. Through innovative partnerships with people and organizations throughout the New York City, DOP provides opportunities for those on probation to access services and opportunities that positively impact their life trajectory. Following the best current data on “what works,” staff at DOP engage in meaningful relationships with those on probation in an effort to enhance community safety and decrease recidivism.

The Department of Probation is seeking to hire two (2) Community Coordinators to serve as Credible Messengers. This position will be DOP’s primary implementer and liaison with the Credible Messenger Justice Center (CMJC.) CMJC is an intersectional and cross-disciplinary partnership focused on expanding knowledge and resources in Credible Messengering: developing and leveraging emerging evidence to engage partners from communities, government, and academia in research and action to expand and enhance credible messenger; initiatives locally and nationally; and provide necessary on-going support, training, and opportunities for Credible Messengers to promote their personal development.

The Credible Messenger responsibilities include the following:

  • Participate in developing planning, recruitment and implementation strategies with respect to all aspects of CMJC’s work,

  • Play an active and as appropriate leading role in program design and implementation, working closely with CMJC partners, other agencies in the justice system and community-based groups,

  • Provide support to stakeholders, new and existing partnerships, and other relationships, as appropriate; including but not limited to handling logistics for meetings and events, such as drafting agendas, taking meeting minutes, and following up with action items.

  • Share learning and best-practices with diverse audiences and represent DOP/CMJC at various community or key stakeholder programs,

  • Provide lead logistical planning for CMJC annual conference.

  • Engage with CMJC Advisory Council by keeping them informed of CMJC activities and inviting their participation and/or collaboration in promoting.

  • Identify needs and interests of Credible Messenger mentors and develop training proposals and other events responsive to those needs and interests.

  • Maintain CMJC “mailing list” design and distribute weekly CMJC newsletter and promotional materials to mailing list or as otherwise appropriate with a special emphasis on social media and develop innovative collateral materials tailored to the needs of the justice-involved population.

  • Act as liaison with DOP management, personnel and staff to increase staff awareness and engagement CMJC initiatives

  • Develop a system for tracking and triaging initiatives and requests so that deliverables are met on time,

  • Compile, review and submit metrics and provide evaluation, coordination, and analytic support to initiatives and new projects, working closely with all partners and stakeholders,

  • Implement creative methods of expanding the CMJC network and of promoting the work and reach of CMJC; and

  • Manage special projects and perform other related duties, as required.

Qualifications

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

  2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
