Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a highly experienced Construction Safety Manager for a significant tunnel project in the New York / New Jersey area. In this role you will develop, implement and enforce safety policies and procedures and programs to ensure a safe working environment. This role involves collaborating with client agencies, labor unions, program leadership, program safety officers, field personnel, and contractors to promote a strong safety culture, provide oversight of all safety events, records, documentation, procedures, processes, investigations and systems.

Role accountabilities:

• Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive safety program specific to the heavy civil tunnel project.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards.
• Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and address potential hazards.
• Collaborate with the Safety Director to develop and deliver safety training programs for all project personnel.
• Ensure that all workers are adequately trained on safety procedures, equipment usage, and emergency response protocols.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and workshops to reinforce safety awareness.
• Assist in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and develop corrective action plans.
• Maintain accurate records of all safety incidents, ensuring timely reporting and analysis.
• Monitor and enforce adherence to safety policies and regulations by all project personnel.
• Work closely with subcontractors to ensure their safety programs align with project requirements.
• Collaborate with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.
• Develop and implement emergency response plans for various potential scenarios.
• Conduct regular drills and exercises to ensure effective responses to emergencies.
• Communicate safety expectations, updates, and best practices to all project team members.
• Foster open communication channels for reporting safety concerns and suggestions.
• Ensure the availability and proper use of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Conduct regular inspections of safety equipment to verify functionality and compliance.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in safety processes and procedures.
• Implement initiatives to enhance the overall safety performance of the project.

Qualifications & Experience:

• 10 yrs. safety compliance experience on heavy civil construction projects
• TBM (tunnel boring machine) experience preferred
• Possess OSHA certifications
• Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSP, CHST) are a plus

We offer nine paid holidays and 20 days PTO that accrue per year. The salary range for this position is $200, 000 - $245, 000. Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
