Job Description

The NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is one of the largest organizations of its kind committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City. Collaborating with other public agencies and not-for-profit partners, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduce street homelessness and assist New Yorkers to transition from shelter into appropriate permanent housing.

The Facilities and Logistics Division (F&L) is responsible for providing both direct and indirect maintenance and repair services to City owned and operated facilities using in-house skilled trade-workers, maintenance contracts and purchasing operation. F&L is responsible for monitoring DHS shelters as it relates to the maintenance of building systems. The F&L guides shelter staff on ways to improve facility conditions and the goal of this unit is to ensure funds are being spent on preventive and general maintenance to avoid premature failure of building systems.

Facilities & Logistics Division is recruiting for one (1) Cement Mason who will:

  • Place and finish concrete surfaces including floors, sidewalks, roads, and curbs.

  • Prepare construction sites by leveling and smoothing surfaces using hand and power tools.

  • Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure the surface of concrete.

  • Install reinforcing materials like rebar, wire mesh, and anchor bolts to strengthen concrete structures.

  • Monitor the effects of weather on concrete curing and take necessary precautions to ensure quality results

  • Repair damaged concrete surfaces, using appropriate materials and techniques.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine work requirements.

  • Mix concrete using the appropriate ratios of cement, sand, gravel, and water.

  • Operate equipment such as mixers, power trowels, and screeds safely and efficiently.

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal construction codes and safety regulations.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by following company policies and procedures.

Work Location: 101-07 Farragut Road, Brooklyn NY

Hours/Schedule: Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm

Qualifications

  1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a cement mason; or

  2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a cement mason, plus sufficient full-time satisfactory experience as a mason’s helper, or relevant training acquired in an approved trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. The school must be approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency.

You will receive credit for six months of cement mason experience for each year of mason’s helper experience or approved training.
