Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Assistant Vice President of Philanthropic Giving (AVP) is a new leadership role in the Office of Development and External Affairs (DEA) at Teachers College, Columbia University (Teachers College or TC). We are looking for an experienced, dynamic, and creative fundraising leader with stellar listening skills and a proven track record recognizing, nurturing, facilitating, and reinforcing donors’ philanthropic instincts and intentions that result in seven and eight figure gifts. The Assistant Vice President of Philanthropic Giving is responsible for retaining existing revenue and donors, sustaining a pipeline of future donors from across all private constituent types, and offering donors opportunities to give through Teachers College to make a smarter, healthier and more equitable world. The successful candidate will manage a portfolio of engaged donors through the complete donor lifecycle (qualification, cultivation, solicitation/negotiation and stewardship). S/he/they/ze will also lead two teams: a team of frontline fundraisers who manage their own portfolios of equally dedicated donors and prospects and the donors relations & stewardship team who are responsible for acknowledging, recognizing and reporting on gifts.

The AVP is responsible for developing and implementing fundraising and organizational strategies that will support Teachers College’s strategic priorities while helping DEA reach $100MM annually in philanthropic cash revenue by FYE2026. The AVP has responsibility for the day-to-day management of the high-value philanthropic team, comprised of fundraising professionals and limited support staff who offer opportunities to make an impact through leadership giving, major giving, principal giving, planned giving and institutional giving. The AVP will also oversee the donor relations & stewardship team that at present supports primarily the high value individual giving teams, but will grow to support the stewardship of all philanthropic revenue generation from all constituency types.

A highly motivated self-starter who is goal oriented, the AVP is a member of DEA’s Leadership Team. The AVP collaborates closely with the Associate Vice President of External Affairs, Director of Development, and the Senior Directors of Advancement Services, Alumni Relations, and Prospect Research & Management to achieve divisional fundraising and retention goals. The AVP will lead prospect engagement opportunities, strategies and solicitations at the highest levels through a collaborative team approach with the President, the Provost, and with heads of TC’s academic programs and centers to ensure the success of the Philanthropic Giving Team. The AVP will serve as a valued source of fundraising expertise and guidance to the entire DEA team.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree required.

Work Experience: Minimum 10 years of direct experience in management and frontline fundraising experience in not-for-profit organizations, with proven success in face-to-face asks for substantial, six-and seven-figure philanthropic gifts.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

• Work successfully in a complex, fast-paced organization serving multiple stakeholders

• Demonstrated leadership abilities in working with volunteers and staff

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team environment

• Discretion in dealing with confidential information and demonstrated a willingness to uphold high ethical standards

• Experience recruiting, managing, and retaining fundraising teams

• Exceptional interpersonal communications skills and the ability to write persuasively and effectively for varied audiences

• Building consensus and handling sensitive matters with tact, discretion, and humanity

• Budget management

• Attention to detail

• Experience using databases required; technology expertise is important

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degrees and/or related certifications highly desired.
