The anticipated salary range for this role is between $76,000.00 and $104,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

“Software Engineer I” is responsible for designing and developing Front Office applications in a variety of programming and scripting languages and toolsets, as well as supporting existing IT systems. “Software Engineer I” needs to understand typical trade and market data models, be capable of analyzing data flows within the company, and maintaining data quality and integrity. “Software Engineer I” needs to communicate with traders and other front office staff as well as with other members of the systems team to assess front office needs and design and maintain systems to support the business.

Role Objectives

  • Developing data analysis and performance metrics to ensure accurate risk measurements, model implementation, proper trade booking and valuation, payments and settlements process, and regulatory reporting.

  • Designing and implementing analytics software solutions for the front or middle office. This includes Prism and Star platforms, reporting framework, data warehouse, and third-party software.

  • Analyzing data flows within the company and maintaining data quality and integrity.

  • Improving efficiency and scalability of existing and future software components to deliver improvements in business process and customer satisfaction.

  • Communicating with traders and other data users and team members to assess front office needs and helping design and maintain trade and market data models to support the business.

  • Performing analytics application support and maintenance

Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science from a top-tier computer science program or equivalent and up to 1-2 years practical experience involving software development and implementation, whether education related or actual job experience; or undergraduate or graduate degree in a quantitative field (mathematics, physics, engineering) and significant (2+ years) practical programming experience.

  • Ability to design and architecture the software solution.

  • Strong analytical skills for diagnosing and troubleshooting potential system issues with quick turn-around.

  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming language, e.g. C++/C#/Java; and an active interest in other computer languages and tools.

  • Ability to operate in mathematical concepts, e.g.: analysis, linear algebra, differential equations, statistics and probability, discrete math, as well as a strong general problem-solving ability.

  • Good communication and user-facing skills, the ability to understand as well as explain complex problems in conversation with front-office staff.

  • Good teamwork and strong work ethic.

  • The following specific skills are advantageous for the position:

  • Proficient in C/C++ programming language; Microsoft .Net/C#, and scripting languages e.g. Python.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office technologies such as: Excel, COM

  • Familiarity with the database concept, relational SQL, coding with OLAP

  • Formal background/training in mathematical finance.
