NASA Socioeconomic Data Applications Center (SEDAC) Student Applied Research Experience in Global Urban Spatial Data Analysis
GENERAL DUTIES:
This role supports development of an high-impact global urban dataset that will be openly distributed via the NASA Socioeconomic Data Applications Center (SEDAC) which is managed by the Center for Integrated Earth System Information (CIESIN) at the Columbia University Climate School
This SEDAC & CUNY collaboration seeks to enhance collaborations between Columbia University and City University of NY by connecting talented, driven students to an on-going global-scale applied research project
Under SEDAC & CUNY supervision, the candidate performs spatial data analysis in ArcGIS or QGIS on global urban datasets
Candidate contributes to documentation of analysis steps performed, and output datasets
Only CUNY undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply
Supervision will primarily be provided by SEDAC, though CUNY faculty are encouraged to distribute this announcement to students and get involved if desired. Alternatively, candidates may wish to flag a potential CUNY faculty co-advisor in their application
Maximum tenure for this role is 10 hours per week, working no more than 560 hours before 1 July 2025 or no longer than 4 months from the hire date, whichever comes first
Other Duties
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION:
Candidates will primarily work remotely, and be expected to visit the Columbia University - Lamont Doherty Earth Observation Campus in Palisades, NY twice during their contract: (1) One visit for project orientation, and (2) a second visit for mid-project check-in or a project close-out meeting with SEDAC supervisor.
COMPENSATION:
$20 per hour for undergraduate students, $25 per hour for graduate students
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma required
Introductory GIS training in ArcGIS or QGIS is required. Intermediate GIS training (e.g., two or more GIS classes) is preferred
Demonstrated experience performing spatial data analysis, for example, spatial joins, zonal statistics, and editing shapefile attributes
Comfort working with spreadsheets (e.g., MS Excel) and word processing tools (e.g., MS Word) is required
Familiarity with online meeting tools such as Google Meet or Zoom
Detail oriented and self-motivated
Excellent communication skills; seeks clarification as questions or concerns arise
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Programming skills in R, Python, or other languages is a plus
Familiarity with global urban contexts is a plus
Ideally interested in issues of global social equity, development, urbanization, climate resilience, or related topics
