SEWERAGE & WATER BOARD OF NEW ORLEANS Utilities Maintenance Trainee I - 3401 in New Orleans, Louisiana

Kind of Work : This is anentry level trainingposition at Sewerage and Water Board's Facilities Maintenance Division. An individual performs a variety of unskilled construction, maintenance and repair tasks. Work also includes assisting journey level Utilities Trade Technicians and Specialists in performing the manual tasks related to their work and learning to use a variety of hand and power tools; and related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of Work

: Reports to:Utilities Maintenance Supervisor or higher level

**Job Summary**: This is unskilled work in the performance of maintenance support and heavy laboring tasks that have been learned by training on the job. **FLSA Status:**Non-Exempt **Supervision Received:** Employees receive detailed instructions and close supervision in the performance of assigned tasks. Work is reviewed both in process and upon completion. **Supervision Exercised:**None **Environmental Factors:**Employees in this class work a conventional work week; some evening or weekend hours may be required in emergencies. Work is performed outdoors or in a utility plant where incumbents are exposed to such conditions as inclement weather, dust, odors and traffic. Work requires strenuous physical activity including frequent bending, stooping, crawling, reaching and lifting heavy objects.

Examples of Work

: - Assists full performance level Utilities trade workers in performing routine maintenance projects such as but not limited to assembling, adjusting, cleaning, installing, inspecting, testing, troubleshooting and repairing system components and equipment. - Learns protocols, standards and methods applicable to system operation/ maintenance; develops competency in a specialty area such as building maintenance, electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, HVAC, or other construction trades. - Assists Utilities Trades Technicians and Specialists in material handlings, structural fabrications and riggings. - Assists journeymen in installing, maintaining, and operating a wide variety of technical and complex appliances, equipment and machines, using a wide variety of tools and instruments related to a specific trade. - Performs, under supervision of a journeyman, a wide variety of bench or field work related to a specific trade; performs maintenance on tools, equipment, machinery, and instruments. - Lifts and carries heavy equipment, and performs standard duties using wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, and other hand tools.

Necessary Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

: - Knowledge of hand tools and standard practices of labor operations. - Knowledge of normal safety practices, and the rules of safe equipment operation and the precaution to be taken in order to avoid accidents. - Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks. - Ability to move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less). - Ability to move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet). - Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time (i.e., picks up trash from street, works under equipment). - Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements. - Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach objects. - Ability to lift arms above shoulder level (i.e., throws bags and loose trash into a truck, enters the cab of a vehicle). - Ability to learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. - Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

Job Distinction/Career Path

: Incumbents with the stipulated qualifications and satisfactory performance may be promoted to Utilities Maintenance Technician I. This is based on superv sory recommendation, availability of funds and concurrence of the appointing authority of the Department.

Minimum Qualifications

: (Original entrance) Six (6) months of experience in construction or building maintenance.

(Promotional) Probationary status as a Laborer at the Sewerage and Water Board.

Kind of Exam

: A qualifying written test and a rating of training and experience, weighted 100%. All related previous experience will be considered for qualification purposes; however, credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years.

The qualifying written examination is designed to measure mechanical aptitude. This is an original entrance and promotional examination.
