NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) is the most powerful rocket ever built, the backbone for a permanent human presence in deep space. The Space Launch Systems (SLS) has multiple vehicles in work across the program. The SLS Chief Engineer (CE) Office will be adding a Development Chief Engineer (Level M) to support all the increased activities across the program and will offer a unique opportunity to provide leadership for major proposals and development activities. The SLS CE office works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments. This position will report to the Program CE and has a focus to provide technical leadership, resolve issues, and ensure successful delivery of fully compliant highly reliable products across the SLS program. This role requires an individual with excellent communication and relationship-building skills, is comfortable interacting with diverse cultures, can work on variable shifts that will enable the program to meet the technical performance parameters and mission success. The chosen candidate will be located in New Orleans, LA, Huntsville, AL or the Kennedy Space Center in FL.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the overall technical authority for a major proposal and development activities across multiple products for SLS.

  • Provide technical leadership in design and development activities performed across the SLS program. Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to lead activities to plan, design, develop and verify complex lifecycle balanced system of systems, system solutions and subsystem solutions.

  • Leads, identifies, and develops, improvements across life cycle of systems.

  • Leads trades studies across program and leads risk/opportunity assessments and technology readiness assessment processes.

  • Leads teams evaluate customer/operational needs to define system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces.

  • Engage and lead design reviews, technical working groups, requirement (spec/ICD) release and updates.

  • Engages in verification, and validation system level performance.

  • Engages in review and approval of verification artifacts for subsystem and vehicle requirement and sell-offs.

  • Support production reviews including readiness, MRR/TRRs, break of configurations, etc.

  • Participate in resolution meetings, RCCAs, and MRB meetings to provide technical leadership for resolution.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

This position is considered safety-sensitive as defined by NASA Federal Acquisition Regulation and is subject to additional drug and alcohol program requirements such as random testing.”

This position requires the ability to obtain access to a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) facility.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics.

  • 10+ years of experience with System Design or System engineering for development programs.

  • 1+ year of experience working with subcontractors and solving technical problems during design production and/or testing.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with written and verbal communication and leading projects, along with the ability to make decisions and deliver results.

  • Experience in Launch Vehicle or Space Vehicle Design at System and Subsystem Level.

  • Experience through entire lifecycle of System – Concept, Requirements, Design, build, Test, verification and delivery.

  • Experience in leading SRR, PDR and CDR.

  • Demonstrated ability in leading anomaly resolution teams and closing issues.

  • Ability to work directly with subcontractors and provide technical direction.

  • Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, mathematics or physics and experience in a professional exempt engineering classification.

Please note that the salary information shown below is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

Summary pay range: $178,500 - $241,500.
