Job Description

General Scope of Duties

The Supervisor of Grounds Services plans, implements, organizes, and monitors all aspects of care for Connecticut College’s 120 acre historical campus landscape and hardscape. Provides oversight for all landscape maintenance, sports turf maintenance, snow and ice removal, and landscape related contractors/contracts: tree, mowing, landscape, storm water, hardscape, etc. Requires self-direction with limited supervision. Establishes a high standard of performance, ensured by training, development, and evaluation of staff. Performs routine administrative and personnel duties.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies outside of normal administrative hours, including nights, weekends, or holidays.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct, train and support members of the team during the work day; manage temporary workers and contracted services as needed and assigned.

  • Perform landscape management and maintenance including, but not limited to, the following: planting, pruning, weeding, watering, lawn care, fall clean up, winter protection, general litter clean up in common areas of campus, service of pedestrian waste and recycling units, snow and ice management on campus roads, sidewalks and paths excluding single family housing; maintain surface drains, catch basins, culverts and drainage swales; repair minor road and path damage to prevent damage to vehicles and support safe use by pedestrians; support athletic department with general maintenance and event preparation.

  • Operate assorted tools, equipment, machinery, and vehicles used to maintain landscape, plantings, roads, sidewalks, and paths; train others to safely operate. Recommend replacement of equipment when necessary.

  • Evaluate and prioritize work orders; ensure proper materials are available for jobs.

  • Mix, apply and train others to safely handle chemicals including pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers.

  • Assist with planning for and coordinating response to weather emergencies to assure continuity of college programs.

  • Assess roads, walkways, and hardscapes; recommend and oversee repair projects.

  • Wear the proper safety equipment to use tools and equipment and handle chemicals; train others to be properly outfitted with safety equipment.

  • Ensure all work processes comply with OSHA requirements and regulations as well as college and departmental policies and procedures.

    Education and Skills

  • Associate’s degree and at least five years of grounds or landscape experience that includes the demonstrated ability to provide professional and quality work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Progressively responsible grounds maintenance experience required.

  • Current pesticide applicators license.

  • Pesticide Supervisory Certification license or ability to obtain within six months of start of employment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems preferred.

  • Must be detail oriented, well-organized; able to work under pressure.

  • Ability to interact well with a variety of people from all areas of the college and community.

  • High integrity needed to handle confidential information.

  • Knowledge of power tools and equipment, supplies, pesticides and chemicals.

  • Current driver’s license.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Accreditation such as CT DEEP or ISA Certified Arborist, NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professional, or similar credentials.

  • Horticultural and land management experience working in botanic gardens and arboreta and/or an institutional campus.

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, landscape management, nursery management or a related field.

    Salary Range $65,800.00-$69,800.00
