MORTON SALT Health and Safety Specialist in New Iberia, Louisiana

his position is accountable to assist the EHS manager in all systems to ensure facility compliance with all applicable Morton Salt, State, Federal, Local Health and Safety standards and regulations. Responsible for ensuring continued compliance and maintenance of the sites MSHA program. Assists in promoting a plant-wide Safety Journey program, thereby leading the 21st Century drive towards a world-class standard of environmental health and safety excellence.

Major Job Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Implement comprehensive Environmental, Safety and Health programs that are in compliance withMSHA and Company Standards to safe efficient operation.

  • Assists in the tracking, reviewing, and implementing actions driven from Near Misses, Safety Observations, injuries, and management of the employee safety incentive program when applicable.
  • Assesses the safety risk of activities and develops recommendations and/or actions to be taken to reduce risk and maintain compliance.
  • Maintains the facility Safety and Industrial Hygiene programs (Hazardous Communication and Hearing Conservation). Includes employee training as required, maintenance of Safety Data Sheets, chemical inventory list, audiometric testing, etc.
  • Regularly works in the field involving others (supervisors, manufacturing personnel, and regulatory agencies) to audit, discuss problems and opportunities. Conducts RCAs to address issues and ensure improved compliance with safety, quality and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Manages the companies 2 Mine Rescue Teams, ensuring that they meet all federal training requirements, equipment standards and certifications as well as overseeing the Mine Rescue Budget.
  • Conduct regular inspection/audits of the assigned area to ensure compliance with established requirements and procedures.
  • Conduct documented effective Safetyand Health Training for employees of the plant and contractors.
  • Responsible for the updates of company policies and procedures.

Environmental:

  • Responsible for the daily and weekly collection of well data.
  • Assist in the hands-on portion of environmental responsibilities.
  • Develops and coordinates delivery of environmental training for all affected site personnel.
  • Works with facility personnel to promote environmental near miss reporting program and sharing of best practices to minimize environmental incidents, deviations, and exceedances.
  • Works with facility personnel to identify and implement sustainable projects to meet company objectives.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in related field or commensurate experience not required but preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in mining not required but preferred.
  • Familiarity with MSHA regulations not required but strongly preferred.
  • Mine rescue participation not required but preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in all phases of salt processing, mining
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Knowledgeable in modern safety procedures
  • High School Diploma
  • Specific training in Environmental, Health and Safety.

Certifications/Affiliations Required

  • MSHA Part 48(a)(b) certification preferred
  • Mine Rescue Trainer certification preferred
  • First aid certification preferred
  • Fire brigade certification preferred

  • Requires daily contact with employees, supervisors and managers in other departments.
  • Routine contact with external governing agencies

Special Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Normal working schedule is daylight shift however the employee must work other shifts as needed to support objectives or work requirements.
  • Responds to urgent or emergency situations outside of normal working hours, as needed.
  • Works in seated or standing positions for prolonged periods of time. May perform sustained manual activities at moderate to heavy levels of exertion including lifting and moving loads of a minimum of fifty (50) pounds, climbing ladders/stairs and working on elevated platforms. Uses hand tools and operates fixed and mobile plant equipment. Works and travels throughout plant environment of varied temperatures and humidity. Wears personal protective equipment, as required and uses full range of motion.
  • Performs duties in confined space entries.
  • Works in general office and mining
