Job Overview:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Development, the Senior Major Gifts Officer (SMGO) is responsible for building relationships with and securing major gifts of $25,000+ from high net worth individuals in support of the hospital and healthcare system s priorities. This position helps identify philanthropic prospects through analytical review of lists and creative engagement methods such as a Women s Philanthropy Circle, Emerging Leaders Council, and Physician s Advisory Council. This position will be familiar with all facets of development including capital campaigns and portfolio management. Skilled at guiding and mentoring other gift officers.

Qualifications

Required:

  • BA degree required

  • 5 years development experience, preferably in a hospital, academic medical center or higher education

  • Previous track record in securing major gifts

  • Previous experience managing or mentoring other team members and a desire to do so

  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills

  • Ability to analyze data and make succinct and strategic recommendations for prospecting purposes

  • Ability to forge strong working relationships with others including donors, advisors and hospital leaders, and have a capacity for engendering confidence and trust

  • Strong sense of humor, positive attitude, curious intellect, and drive to succeed

  • A passion for the development profession and organizational mission of delivering the healthcare our communities deserve

  • Ability to work and deliver results in a fast-paced setting and navigate a complex organization

  • Ability to work independently with a collegial spirit

  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required

  • Willingness to work in-person as required with remote flexibility for work-related travel and other needs as appropriate

Essential Functions:

  • Senior Major Gifts Officer will focus his/her efforts on major gift prospects (individuals capable of contributing at least $25,000 over a five-year period in support of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital).

  • Primarily responsible for managing a comprehensive pipeline of major donors and prospects, this position works with the Foundation VP and AVP to develop strategies for identifying, engaging, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors and prospects.

  • The active portfolio for this position should include at least 40 active donors with goal of cycling through 100-150 donors/year.

  • The SMGO will help develop and execute strategies to encourage pipeline growth, with tactics including but not limited to donor and patient lists review, a grateful patient and physician engagement plan, and other creative engagement opportunities.

  • This position qualifies major donors and refers prospects to VP or other gift officers as appropriate.

  • With support from Manager of Donor Communications & Major Gifts, this position will develop and implement comprehensive stewardship plans for assigned donors and may provide support to the Foundation VP for the same.

  • This position includes mentoring responsibility for two major gift officers.

  • As a mentor, this position will develop a regular cadence of strategy meetings with the major gifts team to support and drive execution of major gift road maps toward solicitations and ensure activity goals around donor contact (calls, written communications, and donor meetings) are met.

  • Raiser s Edge NXT database will be used by the SMGO to report on all solicitations and activity around cultivating and stewarding of major and planned gift prospects. The database will be up to date at all times. This position will prepare donor, presentations, proposals and gift agreements for assigned prospects and may be asked to support Foundation VP with the same. This position will connect with hospital leaders and program managers to understand and outline opportunities for support that align with donor interests.
