Job Overview:Supports the Hospital s mission of care, outreach, research and education and provides quality customer service to all inpatient, outpatients and other Hospital clients by the performance of laboratory testing in the Chemistry laboratory.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate Degree in Medical Technology

  • One-year clinical lab experience or practical training in an approved MLT program.

Preferred:

  • National certification

Essential Functions:

  • Has demonstrated effort in working toward goals established during the previous evaluation.

  • Provides clinical orientation and training for MLT students and/or newly hired technical staff.

  • Communicates and cooperates with coworkers, hospital staff, patients, and visitors in ca clear and courteous manner, exemplifying culture of kindness .

  • Maintains a pleasant and professional demeanor

  • Telephone calls are answered promptly and cordially.

  • Demonstrates FLEXIBILITY and INITIATIVE as evidenced by the following:

  • During periods of inactivity on one s assigned bench, assists staff assigned to other areas with their work, improving the overall efficient of the laboratory.

  • Accepts and performs in a timely and correct manner other duties and tasks as assigned or put in additional time if needed.

  • Suggests new projects/procedures that could improve or expand existing services.

  • Has basic understanding in start-up and maintenance procedures for all routine chemistry analyzers and instruments and the instruments/analyzers in any other areas trained to work.

  • Able to troubleshoot minor problems without assistance, knows when additional assistance or outside service is required.

  • Maintains and expands knowledge and demonstrates continued competency by the following:

  • Attains at least 12 hours of continuing education per year, through a combination of in-house and outside seminars; reading professional journals; participating in self-instruction programs, audio and video continuing education programs.

  • Successfully performs and participates in Proficiency Testing, analyzing unknowns from CAP, internal proficiency samples, or samples from other testing organizations.

  • Practices and enforces lab safety, follows chemical hygiene plan, abides by universal precautions and Hazcom regulations

  • Successfully participates in online testing for the following areas: Hazcom, Hand Washing, Fire Safety, Electrical Safety and any other applicable subjects. Gloves, lab coats, protective eyewear and safety shields are used appropriately as indicated.

  • Proficient in the basic operation of instruments and performance of tests and tasks in routine Chemistry as evidenced by the following:

  • Understands basic theory of instrument operation and the relevance of tests.

  • Has the ability to keep up with routine workload without difficulty.

  • Recognizes normal, abnormal and invalid test results. Calls units and documents appropriately as per established procedures, i.e. critical values, QNS specimens, etc.

  • Performs Quality Control (Q.C) testing correctly and according to laboratory protocols. Can resolve the more common Q.C. failures appropriately and with correct documentation.

  • Utilizes the L.I.S. computer to accurately enter patient results, control values, edit results, and verify the completion of all tests assigned to a bench.

  • Able to competently cover the Central Processing bench in the absence of regular C.P. staff during breaks, lunch, and benefit time.

  • Utilizes the L.I.S. computer to accurately enter requisitions, patient results, control values, edit results, verify the completion of all tests assigned to a bench, and look up test results.

  • Familiar with and able to use H.I.S. system to order tests, modify test orders, and look up results as necessary.

  • Always maintains confidentiality of computer data.
