City of New Bern Water Treatment Plant Operator I, II, III or IV (00498) in New Bern, North Carolina

General Definition of Work

Performs responsible skilled work in the operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities, production wells, booster pump stations, ground/elevated storage facilities and related equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Operating a wastewater treatment plant to ensure compliance with Federal and State requirements. (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

  • Makes regular tours of plant and equipment, monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc.
  • Records readings from meters and instruments.
  • Checks functioning of equipment.
  • Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, sluice gates, blowers, valves, and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.
  • Enters data into computer and ensures precise entries.
  • Changes speed of pumps; opens and closes manual bar screen gate.
  • Checks chemical tanks.
  • Collects samples of raw sewage, primary treatment effluent and grit.
  • Skims grease from settling tanks; pumps sludge, drains tanks, changes clarifiers.
  • Cleans and services pumps, motors, and other equipment.
  • Be available to work in emergency situation to include hurricanes.
  • Makes minor or emergency repairs; performs minor preventive maintenance on plant equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance and grounds keeping duties.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant;
  • some knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to water treatment plant operations;
  • some knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions;
  • ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures;
  • ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations;
  • some skill in the use and care of hand tools;
  • ability of establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in a water treatment plant.

Additional Requirements

  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Water Treatment Plant Operator I- Possession of a Grade C-Well Water Treatment Plant Operator license issued by the State of North Carolina or ability to obtain within 12 months.

Water Treatment Plant Operator II- Possession of Grade C-Well Water Treatment and Grade C-Distribution Operator licenses issued by the State of North Carolina. Must meet position requirements of career development plan.

Water Treatment Plant Operator III- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of Grade B-Well Water Treatment and Grade C-Distribution Operator licenses issued by the State of North Carolina. Must meet position requirements of career development plan.

Water Treatment Plant Operator IV- Possession of Grade B-Well Water Treatment Plant Operator and Grade B-Distribution Operator licenses issued by the State of North Carolina. Must mee position requirements of career development plan.
