What you will do

In this vital role you will be responsible for ensuring execution of a safe, compliant, effective, efficient, and cost appropriate engineering & design programs. The Engineering Technical Authority (ETA) within Amgen Corporate Engineering leads the design effort for critical projects and provides technical expertise across Amgen’s global operations network. This position is part of the ETA organization that includes Process Systems, Facilities and Utilities, Site Project Engineering, Maintenance and Metrology functions. The Senior Engineer will be part of the implementation of capital projects design and delivery teams, among other responsibilities, and will work with the Global Engineering Services Team.

  • Responsible to oversee design, develop, and implement utility and facility systems that meet the needs of biotech manufacturing processes and comply with regulatory standards

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on utility and facility operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, optimization, and improvement.

  • Compressed Gases

  • Clean Utilities such as Purified water USP Grade, WFI, Clean Steam

  • HVAC for manufacturing areas

  • Industrial Waste Treatment Operations

  • Lead or participate in cross-functional teams to execute utility and facility projects, such as equipment installation, commissioning, qualification, validation, and decommissioning.

  • Support Project Manager through project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk, ensuring timely delivery and stakeholder satisfaction.

  • Mentor and coach junior engineers and technicians on utility and facility engineering best practices and standards.

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners, such as vendors, contractors, consultants, and regulators, to ensure effective communication and coordination of utility and facility activities.

  • Support site emergency response and business continuity plans related to utility and facility systems.

  • Perform root cause analysis and corrective and preventive actions for utility and facility issues and deviations.

  • Keep abreast of new technologies and innovations in the field of utility and facility engineering and propose opportunities for continuous improvement.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma / GED and 10 years of Maintenance or Engineering (Mechanical or HVAC) experience

  • Associate’s degree and 8 years of Maintenance or Engineering (Mechanical or HVAC) experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of Maintenance or Engineering (Mechanical or HVAC) experience OR

  • Master’s degree and 2 years of Maintenance or Engineering (Mechanical or HVAC) experience OR

  • Doctorate degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field with 8+ years of relevant experience or master's degree with 6+ years of relevant experience in the biotech, pharmaceutical, or chemical industry

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in designing, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting utility and facility systems, such as HVAC, clean utilities, compressed gases, steam, chilled water, electrical, fire protection, and waste management.

  • Proficient in applying engineering principles, standards, and practices, such as ASME, ANSI, NFPA, and GMP, to utility and facility projects.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and influence stakeholders at different levels.

  • Experience in using engineering software tools, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MS Project, and MS Office

  • Ability to work independently and proactively, with minimal supervision and direction.

  • Willingness and availability to support off-hours and weekend activities, as needed.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
