Position Summary/Description:

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the UNC School of Medicine is recruiting for a Research Associate Position. The laboratory of Dr. Craig E. Cameron and Jamie J. Arnold uses molecular and biochemical tools to understand different aspects of the lifecycle of positive-strand RNA viruses with the goal of developing strategies to prevent and/or to treat viral infections. The responsibilities include: (1) design, execute, and analyze cutting-edge experiments in virology, cell biology, microbiology, immunology, and/or biochemistry with minimal supervision; (2) collaborate with scientists at UNC or elsewhere to bring new technologies into the laboratory; (3) contribute to the training of graduate and post-doctoral students; and (4) contribute substantively to the preparation of manuscripts for publication, presentations at scientific conferences. Ongoing projects include molecular biology of RNA virus genome replication, virus assembly, and spread; virus-host interactions regulating replication organelle formation; RNA virus recombination; and single-cell virology.

Education and Experience:

Extensive expertise in diverse molecular, cellular, and biochemical assays including functional study of nucleic acids (e.g. cloning, in vitro transcription assays, RNAi), characterization and manipulation of cellular gene function (e.g. CRISPR /Cas9 gene editing), protein biochemistry (e.g. protein purification, immunoblotting), fluorescence microscopy (e.g. quantitative confocal microscopy and live cell imaging); and in vitro biochemical/enzymatic assays. Demonstrated experience in handling, growing, and purifying RNA viruses in BSL2+ safety conditions.

Essential Skills:

Background in virology, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, and/or biochemistry as demonstrated by a strong track record of publications in these areas.
