Summary DON Pathways Internship Program You will serve as a Student Trainee (Engineering Technician) in the Pathways Internship Program of NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY. Responsibilities You will perform standardized or prescribed operations, applying a limited background of knowledge of engineering methods and practices. You will provide engineering support in the development of unmanned vehicle systems. You will recommend deviation or alternatives to procedures based upon the familiarity with the problem and study of the pertinent literature. You are eligible for the NR-01 band level if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited high school; OR you are eligible if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited college (including 2-year and 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate in Engineering or a degree that includes at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as Industrial Technology, Construction, Physics, Drafting, Surveying, Physical Science or Mathematics. Enrollment must be on at least a half-time basis. You are eligible for the NR-02 band level if you have completed 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a Bachelor's Degree (or more advanced degree) with a major in an appropriate field of Engineering, Construction, or Industrial Technology; OR a degree program that included 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as Engineering, Engineering or Industrial Technology, Construction, Physics, Drafting, Surveying, Physical Science or Mathematics. Enrollment must be on at least a half-time basis. Note: 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. 120 semester hours of progressive study is comparable to four years and/or completion of an undergraduate degree. All educational requirements and documentation to verify your eligibility for this position must be provided prior to Entrance on Duty. Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) Requirement: This position requires you to currently possess and maintain an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or greater out of a 4.0 scale. (G.P.A.'s are rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.45 rounds to 2.5 and 2.44 rounds to 2.4). Your G.P.A. must be reflected in your resume. As part of the application process, you must complete and submit an occupational questionnaire. PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:· Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.· To be eligible for conversion, Interns must: Be a US Citizen Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program Complete their degree or certificate requirements Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and Perform their job successfully Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance. In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640-hour requirement. Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess : 1) A high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and 2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education: (i) A technical or vocational school; (ii) A 2-year or 4-year college or university; (iii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or(iv) A home-school curriculum For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you must submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.
