Vanderbilt University Sr Technical Support Specialist in Nashville, Tennessee

Job Description

The Senior Technical Support Specialist position supports research, education, and administration in Basic Science Research departments, programs, institutes, and centers within Vanderbilt University playing an important role in sustaining our goals and missions in science and education. This position requires attention to detail, comprehension of scope, and awareness of priorities. This position will report directly to the Associate Director of Research IT. It will be necessary to interact and collaborate with IT staff in both VU and VUMC.

About the Work Unit:

The Basic Sciences is comprised of Departments, Centers, Cores, Institutes and Programs. These areas conduct funded research and provide training for advanced degrees in science. Faculty laboratories, trainees, and science cores that require unique scientific computing support are the focus of this support position.

Duties and Responsibilities

The person filling this position will report to the Associate Director of Research IT. While the supervisor will prioritize the work duties for this position, the execution of those will be independent of the supervisor and the Senior Technical Support Specialist will exercise their unique knowledge with discretion and judgement.

  • Provides advanced knowledge in troubleshooting complex issues on a wide range of operating systems, including legacy systems

  • Cross trains with colleagues to ensure redundancy in critical skills

  • Manages the integrity, permissions and the security of data using a variety of methods for legal compliance

  • Maintains the technology inventory for all devices and network ports

  • Mentors and guides junior level IT staff

  • Remains current on technology by staying abreast of emerging trends

  • Develops policies and procedures that address the business needs and requirements of the department

  • Leads consultations and/or support to customers including de-commissioning, data recovery, system clones and installing, testing, and maintaining products, equipment, and systems

  • Identifies opportunities to enhance customer satisfaction

  • Trains customers on any IT solutions

  • Establishes and maintains ongoing positive relationships with customers

  • Collaborates with other departments or groups to address issues and enhancements of services

Supervisory Relationships:

This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Research IT.

This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications

High school diploma is necessary.

Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

A + Certification is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Advanced computer troubleshooting skills are necessary.

Effective Problem-solving skills are necessary.

Experience with Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX is necessary.

Experience with MS Active Directory and Group Policy and VMWare is preferred.

Experience with Office 365, Sharepoint, and AI is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Physical effort is required to occasionally lift, hold, and carry objects weighing up to 15 pounds.

Manual/finger dexterity in both hands to operate a keyboard and manipulate small objects.

Average sensory abilities to see, distinguish colors, and hear or listen.

Concentration or mental effort required for reading, writing, calculation, analysis, and visualization.

Duties are performed in an office environment with uniform temperatures, normal air conditions, and normal noise levels.
