Job Summary:

The (NEO) Network Engineering and Operations organization is responsible for wired network support within the VUMC enterprise. This position will oversee projects, design new deployments, conduct vendor and product evaluations and assist on complex tickets that have been escalated by junior Operations staff, administer VUMC network architecture and provide specific support in Data Center/ACI. This position will carry primary responsibility for network projects and data center activities, troubleshooting and monitoring of VUMC Network hardware, will actively engage with other workgroups to collectively discuss and implement improvements that will benefit VUMC and will have responsibility for additional network management tools (NetBrain, DNAC).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs configuration and administration of communications network.

• Provide data, voice and video services distribution support.

• Perform routine and advanced maintenance of communications equipment.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES

• Network Integration (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of Network Integration in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering Network Integration products and services without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving technical instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.

• Network Troubleshooting (Intermediate): Demonstrates the ability to identify, locate, isolate, and resolve or repair complex problems relating to products, computers, communications devices, systems, cables and other equipment. Able to make use of all of the advanced capabilities of the primary diagnostic tools and analyzers available. Familiar with the capabilities of vendors to find and fix problems. Capable of finding solutions and answers beyond the area of specialty. Displays the competence to implement solutions that may go beyond the scope of immediate problem. Demonstrates persistence and thoroughness.

• Network Design (Novice): Capable of designing components of an overall network architecture. Gathers network requirements, creates physical and logical network designs and presents designs for approval. Understands bandwidth requirements based on expected traffic and needed performance. Understands trade-offs between different protocols and networking products. Plans and consults with application developers and business clients for the development and implementation of basic solutions that meet business requirements including performance, efficiency, and cost. Creates, reviews and documents router, switch, and link configurations based on standards and plans.

• Voice and Data Moves (Expert): Is a recognized expert and authority in the skill. Occupies the position which is the last internal resource for support or direction. Expected, as a result of the position, to have the ultimate knowledge, control, influence, and/or jurisdiction in the skill. Takes a lead role in developing best practices for the organization.

• Cable and Wiring Practices (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of the Cable and Wiring Practices in practical applications of a difficult nature. Recommends improvements to Cable and Wiring Practices in area of specialty. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully following Cable and Wiring Practices without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving appropriate instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
