Vanderbilt University Application Development Manager in Nashville, Tennessee

The Application Development Manager at Vanderbilt University IT (VUIT) oversees an application development team responsible for the creation and maintenance of custom applications and integrations. This role involves managing day-to-day development activities, ensuring project alignment with institutional goals, and leading the team to deliver high-quality software solutions. The manager is also responsible for strategic planning, resource allocation, and fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

VUIT Management Expectations

  • Manage Application Development team, including recruitment, training, and performance management.

  • Oversee daily development activities, ensuring tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.

  • Act as player/coach, guiding and performing work within the function.

  • Develop and implement plans, objectives, and initiatives to meet organizational goals.

  • Allocate financial and human resources efficiently and effectively to support operational activities.

  • Monitor and evaluate team performance, providing feedback and coaching to enhance individual and collective capabilities.

  • Foster a positive work environment by promoting collaboration, communication, and employee engagement.

  • Ensure compliance with Vanderbilt policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with other departments or stakeholders to achieve cross-functional objectives and resolve issues effectively.

  • Analyze data and metrics to identify opportunities for process improvement and operational optimization.

Project Planning and Execution:

  • Develop and implement project plans, ensuring alignment with university objectives and timelines.

  • Coordinate with stakeholders to gather requirements and define project scope.

  • Monitor project progress, manage resources, and make adjustments as needed to ensure successful delivery.

Quality Assurance and Standards:

  • Establish and enforce development standards, best practices, and policies to ensure high-quality outcomes.

  • Oversee code reviews, testing, and debugging processes to maintain software quality.

  • Implement continuous improvement processes to enhance development practices and efficiency.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, business units, and external partners, to ensure cohesive project execution.

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to provide updates, address concerns, and align on project goals.

  • Represent the development team in meetings and discussions with senior leadership.

Innovation and Technology Adoption:

  • Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies, proposing new tools and methodologies to improve development practices.

  • Foster a culture of innovation within the team, encouraging the exploration and adoption of new technologies.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position has supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Application Development Associate Director.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, related experience is necessary.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, software engineering, or related field is preferred.

  • 7 years of relevant experience is necessary.

  • 2 years of relevant management experience is necessary.

  • Proven expertise in programming languages such as Java, C#, Python, or similar is necessary.

  • Strong understanding of software development life cycles, best practices, and architectural principles is necessary.

  • Experience with project management and resource allocation is necessary.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail are necessary.

  • Ability to oversee to multiple projects simultaneously and deliver high-quality results is necessary.

  • Demonstrated commitment to VUIT’s guiding principles is necessary.
