This is a temporary / seasonal position that begins August 1, 2024 and extends through March 31, 2025. The candidate requisite Wildlife Technician position requires assisting in managing waterfowl populations on NYC water supply reservoirs in Westchester Co, NY, largely in Valhalla and Yonkers, NY. Primary tasks will include observing and recording waterfowl and gull species data, as well as implementing methods to deter populations from roosting on several New York City reservoirs.

Work will be performed outdoors at various locations on and around targeted reservoirs from small boats (18' center console/jon boat), airboats or 4WD vehicles. The Wildlife Technician will operate vessels as a crew chief or may serve as a crew member based on boat handling skills. Crew members will receive First Aid/CPR/AED and boat operation training, as well as other job-related trainings for safe field work.

Primary Responsibilities
In the role of Wildlife Technician, we'll count on you to:
1. Collect field data and identify avian species, predominantly waterfowl
2. Perform waterfowl roosting mitigative measures
3. Operate vehicles and boats

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience in bird identification, particularly with Eastern North American waterfowl and gull species.
  • Experience with small boat and 4WD vehicle operations
  • Candidate must have a minimum of an associate degree in applied science in Wildlife or a closely related discipline (environmental science, ecology, biology, etc.) or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Experience performing technical duties, such as sample collection and data recording.
  • Candidate must be able to work weekends and holidays.
  • Candidate must be able to withstand various field conditions (wet weather, heat, cold, etc.) and be able to hike to observation points, carrying requisite equipment and supplies.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with HDR's vehicle policy.
  • Candidate will be required to submit to NYC and Federal security background checks.
  • Preference given to local candidates
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Microsoft Office product experience
  • General background-related experience
