A Day in the Life

At Medtronic, we're harnessing the power of machine learning (ML) to solve complex problems and create cutting-edge solutions. We're looking for a visionary Principal AI / Data Science Engineer to join our team and lead the charge in developing and deploying impactful ML models that drive real-world results.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Champion the entire ML lifecycle, from data exploration and feature engineering to model selection, training, evaluation, deployment, and maintenance.

  • Collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and product managers to understand business needs and translate them into effective ML solutions.

  • Actively participate in defining data requirements, ensuring clarity and feasibility with a focus on machine learning implementation.

  • Design, develop, and implement machine learning models using various algorithms (supervised, unsupervised, deep learning) and frameworks (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).

  • Lead the process of data preparation, cleaning, and transformation to ensure high-quality training data for models.

  • Fine-tune and optimize model performance through hyperparameter tuning and other techniques.

  • Evaluate model effectiveness using rigorous metrics and ensure interpretability and explainability of results.

  • Lead the deployment of ML models into production environments and monitor their performance over time.

  • Lead design reviews, model development, providing technical insights and best practices.

  • Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in ML research and best practices.

  • Mentor and guide junior machine learning engineers within the team.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelors / Master’s of Engineering in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.

  • 14+ years of total experience in software industry, preferably working with data analytics.

  • 8+ years of in-depth experience in building and maintaining large-scale, enterprise-grade machine learning / AI models.

  • Strong understanding of the entire machine learning lifecycle, from data exploration to production.

  • Proficiency with one or more of the following programming languages: Python, R, SQL.

  • Proficiency in tools such as Jupyter, Git, and cloud-based ML services.

  • In-depth knowledge of various machine learning algorithms (supervised, unsupervised, deep learning) and their applications.

  • Expertise in machine learning frameworks like scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch for model development and training.

  • Experience working with text and/or image data for machine learning tasks (Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision).

  • Hands-on experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau or PowerBI.

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a passion for innovation.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills to effectively lead and influence cross-functional teams.

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) for machine learning deployments.

  • Experience with MLOps practices for automating and managing the ML lifecycle.

  • Experience with explainable AI (XAI) techniques for interpreting model behavior.

  • Strong software engineering skills (Python) and experience with building production-grade pipelines.
