General Job Description

This is a professional position responsible for assisting in all aspects of network installation, administration, and support of LAN / WAN systems. Responsible for managing computer servers and wiring infrastructures for campus and all network work orders for campus; assisting with maintaining core networking services for the university; compiling and maintaining network documentation; assisting with maintenance of campus networks; and providing consultations as necessary to ensure compatibility, integration, and maximization of current information technologies. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Assistant Director of Enterprise Infrastructure Services.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assists in all aspects of network planning, installation, administration, and support of LAN / WAN systems.

  2. Configures and maintains networked switches, wireless, routers, hubs, servers, printers, bridges, and operating systems, including core network systems.

  3. Manages network and voice work orders, to include providing various network support services for the campus network, faculty/staff/student systems, student authentication systems, and data adds/moves/changes.

  4. Maintains name service for the university and resolves protocol and routing issues.

  5. Assists with implementation and maintenance of appropriate network security measures (hardware and software) as directed by network administrator.

  6. Compiles and maintains network and voice documentation and procedures, including cable infrastructure maps and IP address database listing.

  7. Evaluates new network hardware and software technologies for compatibility with the university’s data, voice and video communications network systems.

  8. Engineers further cable additions or relocations.

  9. Monitors and maintains campus infrastructure for all voice and data systems.

  10. Assists security with and enhances maintenance of campus networks (access lists, DMCA SPAM , etc.)

  11. Provides support consultation services for university network technology users.

  12. Develops tools to better serve campus needs.

  13. Installs and manages servers and network management systems.

  14. Compiles and maintains documentation of IP addresses, network utilization, residence halls issues and any ongoing issues with networking services.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

  15. Responds to emergency call services when necessary.

  16. Assists with voice and data needs for special events (i.e., sporting events, etc.).

  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of current server and client-side operating systems.

  3. Skill in network analysis of both hardware and software.

  4. Skill in LAN / WAN systems using TCP /IP.

  5. Skill in routing protocols using BGP , OSPF , and VLANs.

  6. Skill in network design and management.

  7. Skill in configuration and maintenance of hardware and software for networked hubs, routers, servers, printers, bridges, wireless, and remote and terminal servers.

  8. Skill in using network management tools equivalent to Fluke, Intermapper, and SolarWinds.

  9. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  10. Ability to analyze and resolve difficult situations effectively.

  11. Ability to work successfully as a member of a team.

  12. Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines.

    Physical Demands

    Required Education

Completion of at least two years of college coursework or associate’s degree in computer science, network engineering, or a related field is required. Related experience may be substituted for required education on a basis set forth by the Department of Human Resources.

Required Experience and Training

Five years of related experience is required. Experience in LAN / WAN , routing, voice support, and network analysis of both hardware and software is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Specific Cisco, Juniper, Palo, or BiCSI certification is preferred.

Salary Information Hiring Salary - $60,420

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
