Tidelands Health Director of Health Information Management in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

The Director of HIM job responsibilities will include the following:

Leadership & Management:

Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Health Information Management department, aligning goals with the organization's mission and objectives. Manage and mentor HIM staff, including recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and professional development. Develop and oversee the HIM department budget, ensuring efficient use of resources.

Health Information Systems Management:

Oversee the management of electronic health records (EHR) systems, ensuring accuracy, security, and accessibility of patient information. Collaborate with IT and clinical teams to implement and maintain health information systems that support clinical workflows and data management needs. Ensure the integrity and quality of health data, implementing data governance practices to maintain accuracy and consistency.

Reports delinquent medical records to administration in coordination with medical staff bylaws

Interact positively with members of the medical staff by cultivating liaisons and promoting interaction

Compliance & Regulatory Management:

Ensure the organization’s HIM practices comply with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including HIPAA and other privacy and security laws. Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures related to the secure management, retention, and release of health information. Stay informed about changes in healthcare regulations and standards, updating practices and policies as necessary. Represents the hospital in court cases involving subpoena of medical records Assumes the responsibility for successfully fulfilling standards and criteria of licensing and accrediting agencies Stays abreast of regulatory requirements

Data Management & Reporting:

Oversee the classification, and indexing of patient records to ensure accurate billing, reimbursement, and reporting. Ensure timely and accurate submission of required health data to regulatory bodies, payers, and other external entities. Analyze health information data to provide insights that support clinical decision-making, quality improvement, and operational efficiency.

Patient Privacy & Confidentiality:

Safeguard patient health information, ensuring strict adherence to privacy and confidentiality standards. Respond to and manage privacy breaches, ensuring prompt and appropriate action in compliance with regulatory requirements. Serve as a resource for patient and staff inquiries regarding health information privacy and access.

Collaboration & Communication:

Work closely with clinical, administrative, and IT teams to facilitate effective communication and collaboration on health information management. Serve as a liaison between the HIM department and other departments to ensure the smooth flow of health information throughout the organization. Work closely with the Medical Staff on ensuring a complete and timely medical record to adhere to all regulatory and enterprise expectations. Provide regular reports and updates to senior management on the status of health information management initiatives and compliance activities.

Quality Improvement:

Lead quality improvement initiatives within the HIM department to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness of health information processes. Implement best practices for document management and data integrity. Monitor and evaluate the performance of the HIM department, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for leading and managing the Health Information Management department to ensure the accurate and secure management of patient health records. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that the organization complies with regulatory standards, optimizes health information systems, and supports clinical and administrative functions. The Director of HIM oversees the development and implementation of policies and procedures, manages the HIM team, and works closely with other departments to facilitate the effective use of health information across the enterprise.

Education and Experience :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification is required; other relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Health Data Analyst - CHDA) are a plus.

  • 7+ years of experience in Health Information Management, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.

  • In-depth knowledge of health information management practices, including EHR systems, privacy, and compliance standards.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and other federal, state, and local requirements.

  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Proficiency in health information systems, with advanced skills in data analysis and reporting.

  • Epic experience preferred.
