Job Description

This role is hybrid remote with 60% monthly in-office presence in Mount Prospect, Illinois. (3 days in office per week).

As Packaging Engineer for the Dremel organization, you are responsible for the strategic definition for packaging concepts and materials as a member of multiple cross-functional new product project teams (Product, Engineering, Logistics, Marketing, Finance, Project Purchasing, Quality, and Mfg), as well as the development of new packaging designs for Dremel and RotoZip tools & accessories, in a manner consistent with defined performance specifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Translate Marketing and User needs into package designs and structure.

  • Lead and direct package engineering activities of the project teams to achieve successful market introduction according to the New Product Development Process (as measured against targets).

  • Lead strategic design and innovation for utility, sustainability, and manufacturability of packaging.

  • Proactively assess packaging performance, cost, and quality by regularly evaluating packaging designs.

  • Implement innovative and alternative structural packaging designs.

  • Create die lines using CAD for corrugate packaging.

  • Translate Marketing and User needs into package designs and structure.

  • Direct assigned packaging project team activities to ensure packaging-related targets are met.

  • Work with Production teams on packaging processes to optimize packaging performance, cost and quality.

  • Serve as direct line contact for assigned areas on an on-going basis with responsibility for all package engineering tasks i.e. packaging quality of existing items.

  • Corrugate structural design experience preferred to be able to understand and provide direction to structural packaging challenges on new and existing items.

  • Prepare and present packaging samples for Appropriation Requests, reviews, releases and other program updates to management groups, working with management to resolve obstacles and recommending solutions.

  • Create, update, and maintain packaging design using CAD (Pro-E or alternate as appropriate).

  • Work with suppliers for creating packaging structure using CAD whenever possible.

  • ISTA Testing Evaluations and Management

  • Optimizing pallet and shipping container configurations

  • Packing Instruction creation and implementation

  • Rapid prototyping for corrugate and carrying case concepts

  • Die lines translated into build files for artwork

  • Artwork UPC location assistance

  • Redesign existing packaging to gain efficiencies and certifications (i.e. SIOC)

  • Qualifying packaging equipment for material transitions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering, Engineering or Industrial Design is required, IOPP Certification is preferred.

  • Structural packaging design experience required as well as application knowledge on a variety of packaging, utilizing the following: injection & blow molding, thermoforming, blister & skin cards, corrugated, fiber board, flexible films & labels, foam, pulp & wood. Detailed knowledge of the components and processes used in this line of packaging.

  • In-depth understanding of Design, Application and Marketing trade-offs.

  • Demonstrated ability to design, and successfully introduce new packaging into production - on time, at cost, and with a focus on quality, overcoming obstacles to achieve results.

  • ArtiosCAD (or similar) skills highly preferred.

  • CAPE (or similar) knowledge highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle new types of products, with the ability to take management’s perspective to define needs and develop goals.

  • Product launch experience preferred.

  • Proficiency with desktop applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint.

  • Experience in global business environment/multi-national operations.
