McLaren Health Care Unit Secretary - McLaren Careers in Mount Pleasant, Michigan

Position Summary:

The Unit Secretary performs nonprofessional activities to assist the Registered Nurse in caring for patients and works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.

Assists with the clerical and hostess functions of the nursing unit; transcribes physician orders; maintains records, schedules patient test, expedites messages; orders and checks supplies; reports needed repairs.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Functions as a member of the Emergency Room staff.

  • Maintains the patient record according to hospital policy.

  • Arranges for tests and therapy to be performed for the patient by other hospital departments and/or other hospitals.

  • Maintains required reports.

  • Initiates referrals and consultations as ordered by physicians.

  • Transcribes physician’s orders.

  • Exhibits appropriate and courteous behavior when interacting with patients, families, the community and members of the health care team.


  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Must have medical terminology knowledge.

  • Must have previous experience with computers and data entry/typing/keyboarding skills.

  • Current BLS Certification or obtained within six (6) months of hire/transfer.


  • Evidence of successful completion of a clerk-nursing or comparable education.

  • One year medical clerical experience.
