DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: As a S&T Research Chemist, Senior, you will join the PPG Silica R&D team to provide technical support to Silica business initiatives while also contributing to new technology and new product development. Emphasis will be on customer support for the fragmented segments, which includes coatings- and carrier-grade precipitated silica products. The Chemist will collaborate directly with the PPG Silica R&D team and the Silica business to support both the development of new technologies and products and the commercialization of all precipitated silica products with target customers.

Key Responsibilities * You will provide business and technical sales support to lead the expansion of silica business at all accounts the fragmented segments. * Promote and ensure safe work in the Silica R&D labs, including the operation of equipment, handling of chemicals, and preparation of samples. * You will collaborate with Silica Technical Service to provide resolution to customer inquiries regarding coatings- and carrier-grade precipitated silicas. * Investigate customer complaints and design work plans to confirm appropriate corrective actions, and communicate these findings to customers to address their issues. * Provide as-needed technical support to the Silica business at industry events, customer site visits, to build new business opportunities. * Support new technology and product development in Silica R&D by providing guidance, technical support, sample preparation/testing support, with emphasis on coatings-grade silica technologies and through technical collaboration with the PPG Coatings SBUs. * Track customer trials of PPG precipitated silica products by arranging sample shipments, providing technical support, following up with customers, and reporting current status to the PPG Silica business and Technical Service. * Ensure compliance with PPG Environment, Health, and Safety requirements and housekeeping guidelines, including organizing and handling of raw materials and experimental samples. * Apply fundamental chemistry knowledge to define analytical strategy and prioritize work. * Create and interpret experimental data to contribute new knowledge and guide new product development. * Solve technical problems through scientific, experimental, and statistical methods. * Support scientific knowledge exchange with technical associates to promote knowledge retention and collaboration and ensure understanding on technical timelines, progress, and future needs. * Contribute ideas for new technologies to enable new product development and customer base expansion.

Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a relevant technical field, such as Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or an Engineering discipline with a background in chemistry. * 3+ years of work experience in a chemical laboratory setting and 2+ years of work experience in coatings formulation and application and testing. * Commitment to safe work practices, including following all laboratory procedures and contributing to the maintenance of high safety standards. * Experience following standard industrial Environment, Health, and Safety practices and working in the 5S System (or similar workplace organization system) to maximize worker efficiency and safety.
