Mobile County Personnel Board Communication Center Specialist I in Mobile, Alabama

Kind of Work

This is communications and public contact work involving the operation of computer and telecommunication equipment for an action center.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Answers routine questions and complaints from the general public; directs requests to the appropriate department or agency for further action; places service order requests; dispatches after-hours personnel as required; performs follow-up on a variety of requests for information or public complaints; gives out information of a routine nature; refers inquiries to other sources as required; receives and answers minor operation problems for users; operates computer and telecommunication equipment; performs related routine clerical work; refers technical operation problems to appropriate maintenance representative; receives, sorts, and distributes mail; sends faxes; reserves rooms in government buildings; performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and a minimum of one year communications or clerical experience in a public relations capacity; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Special Requirement

Fluency in Spanish may be required, depending upon assignment.

Essential Requirements of the Work

Good knowledge of English grammar and usage; good knowledge of functions and operations of the city, county, state, and public assistance agencies or the ability to readily acquire such knowledge; ability to deal with all telephone contacts in a tactful and courteous manner; ability to quickly convey concise and accurate information; ability to speak with a clear, well-modulated voice and to use proper grammar; ability to operate computerized communications equipment; ability to perform related routine clerical work; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, government officials and the general public.

Distinguishing Features of the Work

An employee in this class is responsible for receiving and processing public and in-house requests for information or action via telephone, electronic or postal mail. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Communication Center Manager or other superior and no supervision is exercised over other employees. An employee in this class may be required to work night, weekend or holiday hours.
