Mobile County Personnel Board Code Inspector in Mobile, Alabama

Kind of Work

This is skilled inspectional work in the enforcement of established codes, ordinances and licenses.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Inspects buildings, construction sites and other land development for building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing code and ordinance compliance; canvasses the jurisdiction for new businesses, additions and alterations; inspects businesses, contractors and individuals for possession of proper licenses; informs builders, contractors and the general public of license, permit, zoning and code requirements; enforces zoning and set-back requirements; makes recommendations for condemnation of non-conforming buildings and structures; checks construction sign erection permits; collects fees for building permits; enforces weed and junk ordinances; coordinates building inspections with the fire inspector; performs minor electrical, plumbing and carpentry maintenance repairs; performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Completion of two years of trade school or college course work in the building and construction trades and a minimum of three years experience at the journeyman level in one of the construction trades; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Essential Requirements of the Work

Good knowledge of all types of building construction methods and materials and the stages of construction at which possible violations and defects may be most easily observed and corrected; good knowledge of the International Code Council regulations; good knowledge of the local building and zoning codes and related laws and ordinances; good knowledge of local business, contractor and individual license and permit requirements; ability to determine if businesses, contractors and individuals are in compliance with license and permit requirements; ability to evaluate the quality of construction and to detect structural and other faults; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints of ordinary complexity quickly and accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, contractors, local businesses and the general public.

Special Requirement

Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.

Distinguishing Features of the Work

An employee in this class is responsible for inspecting buildings, construction sites, businesses and individuals for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances, possession of proper permits or licenses and for performing complete project inspections. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures with considerable independence of action under the general supervision of a superior. Supervision is exercised over subordinate employees as assigned.
