The Global Field Operations team, including FIRST Volunteers and Regional Directors throughout the world, works locally to collaborate and support FIRST’s three programs and offer passionate volunteers and youth participants life-changing, engaging event experiences. The goal is to create and maintain a volunteer driven, self-sustaining group of leaders that will support the growth objectives for all programs in the region with a focus on engaging schools, cultivating local relationships and fundraising.
About the role:
The FIRST Regional Director in the Minnesota/North & South Dakota territory will work part-time in a home office environment, traveling at times throughout the region to develop teams, establish and maintain sponsor relationships and collaborate with other FIRST leaders and volunteers in the area as well as program staff. The Regional Director will be responsible for the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Regional Competition(s) in a specific region.
Act as primary representative for FIRST Robotics Competition in the region/ territory, and primary liaison between the FRC regional planning committee(s), the Field Operations Manager, and other FIRST staff.
Collaborate with leaders and champions of the local FIRST Ecosystem to support long-term direction, sustainability and growth of FIRST programs.
Responsible for fund raising in designated region/territory to fully support FRC program delivery expenses, which may include cultivating new sponsors, nurturing current sponsors and writing grant proposals.
Develop, recruit and support volunteer Regional Planning Committee members in all the committee activities necessary to conduct successful FRC competition(s). Ensure the committees, volunteer staff, and competitions follow the appropriate FIRST standards and guidelines.
Lead the effort to retain, recruit and communicate with FRC teams to meet target growth numbers and for ongoing support to achieve sustainability.
Facilitate and/or support the effort to conduct regular meetings with the, FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge partners, FIRST Senior Mentor(s) and VISTA Members (if applicable) to help facilitate communication across the region/ territory.
Provide direction and assistance to the FIRST Senior Mentor(s) and VISTA Members, as applicable, working collaboratively with all program delivery partners in the region/territory.
Cultivate relationships with local chapters of professional organizations (such as ASME, IEEE, SWE), to build & nurture alliances and initiate advocacy efforts.
May coordinate and/or support ‘off-season’ activities (VIP, volunteer and team recruitment) as applicable.
Monthly reporting and meeting participation as required by Global Field Operations and FIRST Policies.
Work with local businesses, schools, community leaders and policy makers to increase awareness of the FIRST mission.
Education & Experience
BA/BS degree in a related field
Minimum of 7 years of experience in a nonprofit or for-profit business or comparable relationship management role, with at least 3 of those years having fundraising responsibilities.
Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills
Demonstrated budget management and financial reporting skills
Must be willing and able to travel regularly
Experience and knowledge of FIRST is a strong preference
Previous event management experience is a plus
