The Environmental Health Department is seeking a HYDROGEOLOGIST to join their team. This position performs professional duties in hydrology and provides technical expertise on hydrogeologic issues for the Missoula City/County Health Department and the Missoula Valley Water Quality District. Develops and leads studies related to specific hydrogeologic questions. Interprets and maintains databases of hydrogeologic, analytical chemistry and GIS data. Produces map products. Conducts field work. Collects water samples, ships samples to labs, performs field analyses, establishes and maintains staff gauges, monitors water levels and maintains equipment. Authors technical reports. Reviews and comments on remedial investigations and remedial action plans for state and federal superfund sites. Serves as a member of on-call team for emergency environmental health, air and water quality incidents. Investigates complaints and directs or evaluates cleanup of releases. Develops relationships with partner agencies, departments, utilities and educational institutions to address hydrogeologic issues within the Missoula Valley Water Quality District. Prepares and delivers public presentations, educational programs, and technical reports. Investigates complaints and directs regulatory follow-up for remediation, when appropriate. Participates as a member of a team that collects, sorts and prepares household hazardous waste for shipping and disposal. Coordinates restoration and water quality improvement projects. Researches and writes water analysis reports, grant applications, administrative documents, research reports, and special project documents. Attends meetings as department representative, including regular evening meetings. Responds to public inquires and requests for information and technical assistance. Inspects regulated facilities to ensure compliance with state and local environmental health regulations. Works with the public to help them comply with relevant rules and laws. Participates in developing and implementing department quality improvement projects and strategic work plans. Minimum Qualifications•Requires a Master’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, and engineering or a related field.•Requires two years of experience working in a field related to ground water or hydrogeology.•SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires registration as a sanitarian or sanitarian-in-training with the Montana Board of Sanitarians, OR registration as a professional engineer or engineer intern. Minimum standards for sanitarians in training (ARM 24.216.502) require at least 30 semester or 45 quarter credit hours in physical and biological sciences including at least one successfully completed course in chemistry, biology, and microbiology (microbiology can be taken after hire). Requires a valid Montana driver’s license. Requires immunizations or proof of immunity to certain infectious diseases, and a TB test. Physical/Environmental DemandsRequires some physical exertion, bending, climbing; above average agility and dexterity. Requires lifting 10 pounds frequently; moving 50-100 pounds occasionally. Work involves moderate risks which require special safety precautions and outdoor exposure to extreme weather conditions. Work involves exposure to laboratory chemicals, pathogens and toxic or hazardous materials. Requires travel to remote sites and scheduled weekend work.
