Job Overview

As a senior electrical systems and applications engineer for our A&D team, you will be one of the primary technical interfaces with our customers and suppliers and will oversee the cost takeout and value engineering activities for aerospace and defense products. You will need to understand the design and qualification aspects of these products and apply this knowledge to show the impacts of component changes to cost reduction.

Responsibilities

  • Technical lead between customer engineering team and key engineering suppliers, driving cost takeout and value engineering for aerospace and defense products.

  • Leading a multi-disciplined team and coordinating efforts to efficiently resolve roadblocks during cost take out exercises.

  • Create proposals and evaluate cost impact of implementing changes to components. Keeping in mind how they affect product level and system level design/redesign for function, cost and reliability.

  • Manage product/component level implementation of cost takeout/value engineering initiatives by overseeing project execution by Celestica product design partners.

  • Understanding requirements for Aerospace qualification based on Class 1 and Class 2 changes.

  • In-Depth understanding of low, moderate and high power component technologies, both passive and active, and key characteristics that drive cost.

  • Understanding component supersession including components under QPL, NSR and other military numbering systems.

  • Initiate cost effective design changes without affecting operation or reliability of the product

  • Active participation in industry conferences and standardization bodies to influence and facilitate development of Celestica’s innovative, market leading product development services.

  • Moderate travel (up to 10%)

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related electrical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Ten plus years of relevant experience in the design of low, moderate and high power aerospace products and solutions

  • Involved in qualification of end units and follow on support of customers during these phases.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of power distribution systems in aerospace.

  • In-depth knowledge of component design used in aerospace such as magnetics, transistors, electromechanical relays, contactors, and capacitors.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the development process with phase gates

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment used for systems and subassemblies

  • Strong knowledge of materials and component construction used in aerospace systems and subassemblies

  • Strong understanding of the effects of altitude on component construction, selection and reliability.

  • Understanding of Hermetic vs plastic part selection and application and mitigation of effects such as tin whiskering due to altitude.

  • Strong knowledge of PCB layout for many power level applications both digital and analog designs.

  • Strong understanding of digital components and key characteristics that allow for substitution.

  • Strong understanding of thermal and mechanical systems and how they apply to the cooling and mounting of components.

  • Strong understanding of Military specifications and supersessions and how they affect component choice.

  • Strong understanding of EMI and how it is affected by component selection.

  • Good knowledge/network of suppliers/manufacturers capable of providing components for the aerospace field.

Physical Demands

  • Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.

  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.

  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.

  • Occasional travel may be required.
