We are looking for instructors for the following two courses: English Composition for 10th grade students: This class meets every Thursday. Instructors must be available from 3:00-6:00 pm each Thursday for the entire academic year in addition to office prep hours with TA. ACT Prep & Career Exploration for 11th grade students: This class meets every Tuesday. Instructors must be available from 3:00-6:00 pm each Tuesday for the entire academic year in addition to office prep hours with TA. Job Responsibilities English and ACT Prep or Career Exploration Instructor (100%) Revise and/or create curriculum in high school level English Composition and/or ACT Prep & Career Exploration course. Prepare weekly lesson plans and teach in a classroom one day a week at the University of Minnesota each Tuesday and/or Thursday evening during the Minneapolis School District calendar year. Monitor attendance, document student performance and complete student evaluations as required by TRIO Upward Bound. Assess student learning and inform professional staff of student academic concerns and areas for improvement. Support program mission and objectives by attending additional program events. Supervise one undergraduate teaching assistant. Attend staff training and occasional staff meetings. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree Experience w/ direct classroom instruction Experience working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual and/or urban high school students (can be outside a classroom setting) Classroom teaching and management experience Must pass criminal background check Available for the duration of Minneapolis Public School's 2024-2025 year calendar, Sept - May Preferred Qualifications Experience delivering ACT test preparation and/or general test preparation Experience teaching English including essay writing, sentence structure and grammar mechanics and creative writing Experience working w/ English Language Learners (ELL) Experience working with low-income, and/or students who will be the first in their family to attend college (can be outside a classroom setting) Experience developing and evaluating curriculum Strong classroom management skills Experience evaluating student learning and content retention Experience supervising teaching assistants Strong communication skills (written and oral) Willingness and flexibility to fulfill other tasks assigned to further TRIO Upward Bound program goals Candidates who have overcome and/or experience similar socio-economic backgrounds to the TRIO Upward Bound student population including: low-income, first generation (to go to college) will receive priority consideration. About the Department Program Overview TRIO Upward Bound (TRIO UB) is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education (USDE) equal educational opportunity program. TRIO UB is a college preparatory program for high school students who come from low-income families and are working to be the first person in their family who attends college. TRIO UB works with students, parents, schools and communities, on a long-term and intensive basis to help generate both individual and systemic change. Services are designed to help participants build the skills needed to succeed in postsecondary education. TRIO Upward Bound annually serves 118 Minneapolis Public High School students; this federal grant project has received continuous funding since 1966. Program Objectives; To improve students' academic skills through intensive classroom instruction. To further students' academic, personal, social, and cultural development. To provide educational opportunities not usually available to low-income youth from diverse, urban backgrounds representing varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds. To motivate students to graduate from high school, matriculate to, and graduate from postsecondary education. To enhance the academic relationships among students, parents, and high school staff members for student success.
