Position Overview This position contributes to teaching efforts primarily for HORT 1001 (Plant Propagation) and HORT 1015 (Plant Families for Plant People) in the Department of Horticultural Science. This position reports to the Department Head and works closely with the primary HORT 1001 course instructors (faculty) to achieve course learning objectives. Responsibilities (80%) Classroom Instruction and Course Management HORT 1001: Teach four to five 2-hour laboratory sections weekly. HORT 1015: Teach one lecture and three to four 2-hour laboratory sections weekly. Lecture, facilitate discussion, demonstrate laboratory techniques and safety measures, answer student questions, and proctor exams/quizzes. Set up and clean up laboratory materials. Prepare and grade laboratory reports and quizzes/exams, manage gradebook, update laboratory Moodle/Canvas site, and respond to student questions and concerns via email and office hours. Contribute to the updating of laboratory manuals in collaboration with the primary course instructor. (15%) Preparation and Management of Laboratory Materials Preparation and purchase of chemicals and chemical solutions. Preparing handouts and quizzes. Purchase of plant supplies and plant maintenance, involving long-term planning for care and replacement of plant stock for course purposes. Oversight of course greenhouse area and plant materials in coordination with greenhouse managers. (5%) Teaching-related Service Activities and Professional Development Participate in University workshops related to teaching, classroom technology, diversity and inclusion, and other related topics. Participation in committee service, oversight of student clubs, course recruitment, participation in departmental initiatives, etc. Advise the Hort Club Qualifications Required Master's degree in a field related to plant or agricultural sciences Classroom teaching experience Preferred University-level teaching experience Proficient at managing online courses using an LMS such as Canvas Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to effectively manage project timelines Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communication, including presentation and public speaking Proficiency in using a variety of technologies and software programs (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Suite, mobile applications, educational software, etc) Understanding and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness and ability to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from culturally diverse populations Benefits Working at the University At the University of Minnesota, you'll find a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues who are interested in lifelong learning.
