For in-person work, the primary location of this position is the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Job Duties The University of Minnesota Department of Forest Resources seeks a Researcher 5 to support research into forest carbon estimation and modeling in support of the United States' National Forest Inventory and Greenhouse Gas Inventory. The researcher will work with scientists from the University of Minnesota and USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station Forest Inventory and Analysis Program's Carbon Science Research Group. Current funding is sufficient to support the research effort for at least 1.5 but not more than 2 years. Future funding is contingent on satisfactory progress and success in securing additional funding. Specific job duties include: (50%) Conduct research investigations of biometrical refinements of the United States' National Forest Inventory and Greenhouse Gas Inventory (i.e., the research program). (20%) Evaluate, suggest alternate methods, modify or develop new procedures and techniques to aid in the investigation of the research program. (10%) Interact with various agencies to acquire and interpret data, develop novel methods for using programming, model building, database development, and technology transfer. (20%) Prepare manuscripts of investigations of the research program and manage the submission and review in peer-reviewed journals; present results of investigations at scientific conferences/meetings. Required Qualifications PhD in forestry, natural resources, or ecology. Demonstrated experience in scientific investigation of forest ecosystems. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated ability to work independently. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with other researchers. Demonstrated ability to communicate results of scientific investigations. Demonstrated experience conducting investigations of stand dynamics. Demonstrated experience conducting investigations of forest carbon. Demonstrated experience with methods for statistical analysis of longitudinal data. Demonstrated experience with US national forest inventory data and procedures. Demonstrated experience with methods and software that improve accessibility, transparency, efficiency, and reproducibility of statistical estimation and analysis methods involving large data sets.
