Job ID359983 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyResearch-Researchers Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryTemporary Job Code9742R5 Employee ClassAcad Prof and Admin About the Job The primary purpose of this position is to support ongoing research in understanding Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to help develop experiments to test potential treatments for AD and other neurological diseases. This position requires an ability to work well independently as well as work closely with a team. Hours are flexible but this position does require some weekend work. Job Duties/Responsibilities: 50% Design, plan, implement and evaluate multifaceted research projects involving mouse models of neurological diseases: - Plan, schedule, and implement breeding of experimental cohorts taking into account behavioral or neurological phenotypes with a known temporal progression, in order to achieve sufficient animal numbers (including statistical power calculations), include sufficient controls and satisfy experimental designs. - Coordinate time sensitive experimental procedures that require advanced planning with colleagues to ensure that behavioral and surgical rooms are available when needed and staff are available. - Perform mouse husbandry, stereotaxic surgery, behavioral testing and drug delivery on mouse models of neurological diseases. - Maintain tissue and animal databases and generate new tissue inventories for all managed experiments - Provide tissue and animals to other staff members or collaborators at the UMN or other institutions, including the proper documentation, safe and appropriate packaging of biological samples, preparation of shipments and communication with the recipient investigators. 35% Design, plan, implement and evaluate research projects involving protein studies of neurological diseases: - Design, plan and implement studies of human and mouse brain tissue, CSF and blood to look for biomarkers of AD and other neurological diseases using Quanterix SIMOA. - Evaluate the validity of results and troubleshoot assays and/or experimental designs as necessary to improve outcomes. - Perform protein extractions, immunoprecipitation, Western blots and other procedures as needed to meet experimental designs. 15% Laboratory Administration: - Supervise controlled substance usage and DEA records; including ordering, proper storage and dosages, and disposal of controlled substances - Serve as main point of contact for Laboratory Safety and ensure new and existing lab staff are properly trained and receive yearly updates. Serve as primary designate for DEHS and disposal of hazardous waste. - Troubleshooting a wide range of technical issues within the lab, including computer hardware or software issues, analytical equipment (eg. real time light cycler, thermalcycler), and behavioral equipment. Troubleshooting and/or working with vendor's technical support, maintaining and upgrading critical infrastructure to prevent downtime or loss of experiments. - Develop or alter standard operating procedures when necessary - Regular attendance of lab meetings and seminars, including presentation of data and provide updates on current and planned experiments, provide feedback and critical assessment of data presented by other team members. - Assist with writing papers and preparing data for grant applications and other funding opportunities Qualifications Required Qualifications: - Advance degree with at least 1 year of relevant experience - Must have experience handling animal models Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with stereotaxic surgery and/or animal behavior testing - Demonstrate working knowledge/troubleshooting of computer hardware - Experience with Quanterix SIMOA or other sophisticated assay platform - Experience with statistical and graphing software (ie.
