Our lab studies biofilm formation and uncharacterized gene function in Gram-positive bacteria like Enterococcus faecalis using a combination of in vitro, in vivo, and computational approaches. We need additional research support carrying out experiments, preparing DNA samples for sequencing, and analyzing data. The Researcher 1 will work alongside other members of the laboratory to carry out experiments and analyze data. The general research responsibilities will include culture of bacterial organisms, preparation of DNA and RNA samples, growing and analyzing biofilm cultures, and communicating with collaborators and other lab members. Additional responsibilities will include assisting with ordering and inventory of supplies, maintaining lab notebook, presenting at lab meeting, and professional development to acquire new skills. Research (75%): under general supervision of senior lab members, the Researcher 1 will carry out experiments using established protocols (including preparing RNA and DNA samples for sequencing, growing and analyzing biofilm samples, and culturing lab and clinical isolates of bacteria) and analyze data General lab tasks (10%): including making reagents, autoclaving, keeping track of supplies and assisting with ordering, assisting with onboarding of new researchers Writing and data presentation (10%): includes presenting at lab meetings, preparing figures from experimental results, and reading scientific literature Professional development (5%): includes development of new laboratory skills Qualifications All required qualifications must be included in the application materials Required Qualifications: * BA/BS in a Microbiology (or anticipated completion of degree in May 2024) or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years * Coursework including upper-division laboratory in microbial physiology and diversity * At least 3 months experience as an undergraduate researcher (or equivalent) in a research lab, including experience with bacterial growth curves, biofilm assays, and data analysis * Experience handling Enterococcus species and BSL2 laboratory training * Basic statistical analysis skills including experience with Excel * Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work with others in a team environment, excellent time management skills About the Department is a community of scholars committed to discovering and disseminating knowledge about the microbial world.
