Overview

MHEALTH Fairview has an exciting opportunity for a full time Laboratory Technical Specialist position at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank (https://mhealthfairview.org/locations/m-health-fairview-university-of-minnesota-medical-center---east-bank) in the Flow Cytometry section of the Hematopathology laboratory. This is a Monday-Friday, day position with weekend and rotating holidays as needed.

Testing includes 10-color Leukemia/Lymphoma immunophenotyping, stem cell enumeration, and lymphocyte subset analysis. The Technical Specialist will be responsible for the oversight of Flow Cytometry operations, including analyzer maintenance, validation, calibration, quality control, training, and troubleshooting. They will be a member of the laboratory leadership team and will be involved in several process and quality improvement initiatives. This position will have responsibility for maintaining regulatory compliance for all areas in Flow Cytometry, such as CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and hazardous material storage and disposal. This position will have both technical and administrative responsibilities. The Technical Specialist works closely with staff, fellows and pathologists to interpret data and work on clinical lab development projects.

Responsibilities Job Description

The Technical Specialist has direct responsibilities for the technical operation of the Flow Cytometry section of the Hematopathology laboratory. This includes acting as technical resource, performing a wide variety of complex diagnostic procedures and directing workflow to ensure the accurate, efficient and most cost-effective provision of testing. This position is also a primary resource for compliance, regulatory and quality assurance activities. The Technical specialist develops new assays, works closely with staff, fellows and pathologists to train, provide technical expertise, interpret data based on clinical knowledge and other conditions affecting test results.

  • Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of assigned laboratory(s)/section(s) and participates in planning and financial management as appropriate.

  • Performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic procedures including waived, moderate or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA ’88.

  • Directs workflow in the daily operations of a laboratory section and is a technical resource for staff in problem solving and in the evaluation of testing results for accuracy, determining when recheck or other intervention is needed. This may include directly communicating results to provider to investigate and resolve incongruent results.

  • Partners with key stakeholders to ensure appropriate quality and performance measures are in place to meet any policy, compliance, or regulatory requirements.

  • Coordinates the preparation of the lab section for inspection by accrediting agencies.

  • Orients individuals in laboratory operations including routine and complex testing methodology, instrumentation and information systems, documenting progress, developing learning plans and providing feedback to both employee and leader.

  • Acts as resource for laboratory information systems functions coordinating change and implementation requests as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA’88.

  • 2 years of Flow Cytometry experience as MLS/MT

  • Possess or be eligible to receive appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification, CLS/MT (ASCP) or ASCP specialty certification (SCYM) . If not certified at the time of hire, must obtain certification within 1 year of eligibility/hire.

Preferred Experience

  • 5 years of experience in Flow Cytometry.

  • Instrument validation and assay development.

  • Leukemia/Lymphoma result gating and analysis.

  • Advanced technical operation and troubleshooting of flow cytometers.
