Job ID359669 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyLR-Technical Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code4925 Employee ClassAFSCME Unit 7 - Technical About the Job Position Summary: The purpose of the Laboratory Maintenance Technician position is to support the Lab Manager in maintaining the research equipment and work environment for the academic research labs within the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism in the University of Minnesota Medical School. iBAM is a world-renowned aging research institute with over 100+ scientists studying aging in unique ways. Responsibilities: Lab Equipment & Waste Management (70%) Equipment Maintenance: * Responsible for checking CO2 and LN2 tanks at the beginning and end of each work day and change them as needed o Communicate ordering needs of tanks to Lab Manager * Responsible for implementing regular maintenance tasks listed on the Equipment Maintenance Calendar o Perform regular maintenance and calibration on lab equipment to optimize and prolong its performance * Assist in development and implementation of larger scope equipment maintenance in partnership with Lab Manager under the direction of the Director of Operations (DOO) o Includes freezers, liquid nitrogen CryoStorage tank, qPCR machines, and other equipment as needed * Arrange and serve as contact for movers when large equipment is received or needs to be relocated * Assist with management of operating manuals for all equipment * Other lab maintenance duties as assigned Equipment Cleaning: * Responsible for implementing regular cleaning tasks listed on the Equipment Maintenance Calendar o Perform regular cleaning of lab equipment to optimize and prolong its performance * Assist in development and implementation of larger scope equipment cleaning and organizational projects in partnership with Lab Manager under the direction of the DOO o Includes freezers, liquid nitrogen CryoStorage tank, qPCR machines, as well as all university-managed facility equipment such as cold rooms, autoclaves, etc. * Other equipment or lab cleaning duties as assigned Waste Management: * Responsible for assisting Lab Manager with proper removal of lab hazardous chemical waste o Includes surveying of hazardous chemical waste storage areas to assess need for removal IT (10%) * Serve as liaison between iBAM and university OIT department for computer and other needs o Responsible for handling ordering licensing for various programs we use and communicating with researchers o Includes computer troubleshooting, ordering suggestions for ongoing IT needs in partnership with OIT. Lab Inventory Management (10%) * Assist Lab Manager with taking of inventory of common lab consumables, media and reagents * Assist Lab Manager with receipt and storage of lab orders includes communication with lab members regarding package receipt and storage Lab Training & Data Management (Safety & Compliance) (10%) * Assist Lab Manager with Internal / External safety plan training * Assist Lab Manager with lab safety audits in partnership with DOO Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies with critical pieces of equipment Qualifications Required Qualifications: High school graduation or the equivalent plus two years college coursework in an appropriate scientific field and a minimum of two years of work experience in maintenance, repair and construction, machine shop, storage, and/or audio visual aids. Must be familiar with basic lab equipment and operation Must have good technical abilities with tools, scientific equipment, and IT Must be able to lift 50 pounds and be comfortable with moving large items when necessary About the Department iBAM is part of the growing Geroscience movement that aims to attack the numerous debilitating diseases associated with old age through slowing or reversing the aging process itself. iBAM faculty study aging biology with the goal of developing drugs to target those processes.
