UMPhysicians Genetic Counselor and Research Coordinator (Cardiology Clinic) in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Why M Physicians? The Genetic Counselor and Research Coordinator compiles and evaluates the family history and genetic test results of cardiovascular patients to provide genetic counseling services to patients and/or their families. Participates in the design, development, and implementation of genetic research within cardiovascular services. Coordinates research results and acts as the protocol administrator. What you will do as aGenetic Counselor and Research Coordinator: Provides genetic counseling to individuals identified with a cardiac genetic condition or at potential risk for developing heart disease. Includes the ability to elicit and interpret individual and family medical and psychosocial histories, provide cardiac risk assessment, communicate pertinent disease and risk information clearly, explain genetic testing options and outcomes. Explain technical and medical aspects of diagnostic and screening methods, including associated risks, benefits, capabilities, and limitations. Assists patients and families in reaching decisions about genetic testing that correspond with their risks, family goals, values, and religious standards. Counsels' patients on potential adverse effects of positive gene tests; discusses limitations of negative or uncertain results. Coordinates clinical genetic testing that may be available for patients including informed consent, lab requisition forms, and letters of medical necessity. Teach classes for genetic counseling students, medical genetics fellows, residents, and medical students. Promote understanding of the medical, ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic counseling and testing for other health care providers both internally and within the greater community Maintain and improve current knowledge of complex genetic issues, attend appropriate lectures, conferences, rounds, and regional/national meetings. Participates in design, writing or editing of research protocols Develops and maintains cooperative and positive working relationships with team members and collaborates with team to identify and resolve issues. What you will need: A Master's Degree in genetics counseling or a related field from a program accredited by a national certification board for medical genetics personnel. One year of professional genetic counseling experience, or equivalent (student internship acceptable). One or more years of training and experience in Clinical Research Proficient with electronic data reporting and able to adapt to a flexible schedule. Demonstrated detail-orientation in all aspects of data collection and recording.
