Position Description The Public Works department is looking to fill 6 vacancies: - Engineering Technician I for Surface Water & Sewers division (3 positions) - Engineering Technician I LAB for Transportation Engineering & Design division (3 positions) Engineering Technician I - Surface Water & Sewers Assist in Civil Engineering work by performing calculations, site inspections, manual and computer aided civil engineering design, survey work and other technical work. Engineering Technician I LAB - Transportation Engineering & Design Assist in the technical work in the construction lab or in the field while learning the specific techniques of testing paving and construction materials. Work Location: These positions currently work on-site only. The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas. Job Duties and Responsibilities Engineering Technician I - Surface Water & Sewers * Perform inspections and investigations of tunnels, outfalls, manholes, catch basins, and other sewer infrastructure to evaluate assets' condition and performance. * Inspect and ensure proper construction techniques for various sanitary and storm sewer projects with various contractors and governmental agencies. * Assist in preparation of paperwork and documentation describing sewer improvements needed * Field verify, enter, and maintain records using modern software (such as Adobe, ArcMap, Maximo, Excel, etc.) * Analyze sewer asset data using software such as ArcMap / ArcGIS, Adobe PDF editor, MS Excel, MS Access, SharePoint, Maximo Maintenance Management Software, and Granite XP CCTV Viewer. * Perform a variety of engineering technician work in the office regarding construction project design, shop drawing review, cost estimation, handling communications, completing forms, etc. * Coordinate closely with contractors on work which can affect adjacent businesses or property owners. * Perform mathematical calculations, including grades, quantities, etc. * Other duties as assigned Engineering Technician I LAB - Transportation Engineering & Design * Assist in and testing various construction materials and soils in the lab and in the field. * Keep records of tests conducted. * Prepare reports with analysis and related written documentation as required. * Assist on the land survey crew. * Assist in the preparation, production, editing and maintenance of plans, layouts, as-built plots, drawings from field surveys and other civil engineering related documents using computer aided drafting/design (CAD) and manual techniques. * Inspect work done in the right of way including driveway, curb, sidewalk, alley, etc. * Attend specific training sessions offered by the Minnesota Department of Transportation to gain certification in paving material (asphalt and concrete) and soil analysis. * Record sub-grade evacuation and plot soil profiles for construction projects. * Perform cleaning and maintenance duties in the lab as required. * Assist in repairing, calibrating, and maintaining equipment. * Other duties as assigned Required Qualifications Minimum Education: Eighteen months post High School training in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent with verifiable post high school course work in science or equivalent. Eighteen months of verifiable construction field experience may substitute for this requirement. Minimum Experience: N/A Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered. Licenses/Certifications: * Possess and maintain a valid driver's license. * Lab positions are required to obtain the following MnDot certifications within 2 years of hire date as a condition of continuous employment: Concrete Field 1, Bituminous Street 1, Aggregate Production 1, and Grading and Base I An updated resume to your application is strongly encouraged, but not required. Selection Process The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant educ tion and experience 100%. It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score 70% on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process. Background Check The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position. Drug and Alcohol Testing All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire onemonth after it has been established. Interview Selection The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Knowledge on how to read municipal construction plans. * Experience measuring and tracking quantities. * Knowledge of computer software, applications, and technology that supports the work of the unit. * MnDOT Certifications are desirable. * Strong customer skills and the ability to work with businesses and property owners regarding access, construction schedule and upcoming operations. * Experience working in a laboratory involving use of chemicals and testing equipment for construction materials testing is preferred. * Ability to make mathematical calculations * Ability to successfully complete training to become certified in soil and pavement material testing with State of Minnesota * Good knowledge of the use chemicals and lab equipment. * Ability to prepare reports on quality of materials tested. * Good Communication skills. * Ability to lift heavy materials As the largest and most vibrant city in the state, Minneapolis depends on purposeful, dedicated and innovative employees.
