In this position the person hired is responsible for coordinating course management/development of learning materials for the lab portion of CEGE 1501: Environmental Issues and Solutions, which is a popular undergraduate level class. During this time they will develop learning plans and interactive activities for students that are both educational and engaging. In this role they will also work closely with faculty and the Department of Environmental Health Services as the primary safety manager for floors 6 and 7 in the CEGE building. The selected candidate will be passionate about human and environmental health, safety, and instilling environmental awareness and stewardship in our students and communities. Position Specifications: This is a 9-month appointment that will be full-time during the academic year During the summer, the position will be on short work break with no responsibilities during this time; all work is to be completed during the 9-month appointment 40% - Course management/development of learning materials Maintain the laboratory piece of the Canvas site including ensuring grading is accurate and follows policy Generate grading rubrics and solutions Responsible for CEGE 1501 laboratory manual; updating, editing, ordering Generating pre-lab PowerPoint presentations design, set up and tear down of the laboratory experiment each week, cleaning, testing, growing cultures, collecting specimens, designing supplemental materials, and maintaining and ordering items that will be used in lab so that everything is in working order Secure transportation for field trips 30% - Teaching CEGE 1501 Work independently, of faculty, as the CEGE 1501 laboratory instructor Teach multiple lab sessions during the academic year Design laboratory makeup materials for student absences 5% - Course Supervision/Communication Supervising the assigned CEGE 1501 Laboratory Teaching Assistants (TAs) Out of class communications with students to assist them in their understanding of the materials, and supporting TAs Mentor and coach students and TAs on how to use laboratory equipment 20% - Safety Manager floors 6/7 Complete appropriate safety training and ensure the TAs are in compliance Supply and maintain appropriate PPE for the students in 1501 lab course Serve as a liaison and facilitate communication between our department and DEHS Actively advocate for safety within our building Consult on safety training by making sure Principal Investigators (PIs) and staff are aware of all required safety training and resources available to them Schedule and participate in inspections of laboratories with DEHS personnel Ensure our department is identifying and implementing safe work practices Identify new safety and health hazards within our building and address them with personnel in CEGE Communicate with faculty/PIs to make sure they understand their responsibilities Notify DEHS of new and changing faculty space assignments, including faculty leaving the University Attend Department Safety Officer (DSO) training and complete updates to training Make sure PIs annually train their research personnel on their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and complete lab-specific training Check physical set ups within the building for health and safety issues, such as safe functioning of laboratory and safety equipment, and proper chemical storage and handling Ensure audit findings are reviewed by PIs and inform them of their responsibility to act on identified deficiencies in a timely manner, and that deficiencies are ddressed Inspect teaching and research labs on a regular basis Managing the autoclaves in room 650 and the cold rooms on the 6th floor 5% - Other duties as assigned Qualifications Required Qualifications BA/BS plus at least four years of experience or advanced degree plus two years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years; often the senior-most individual contributor in a department to whom other more junior employees go to for technical guidance. Preferred Qualifications Experience working within a higher education institution The ability to function independently as a co-instructor for an undergraduate course Effectively work with outside departments such as Environment Health and Safety (DEHS) and Facilities Management (FM) Must possess strong problem solving skills Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing The ability to effectively supervise multiple employees Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively multi-task Maintain level headedness in the event of an emergency Willingness to learn the University's systems such as Canvas and those for training needs The ability to speak and teach large groups of people Knowledge and willingness to work with hazardous materials such as chemicals and radioactivity The ability to keep detailed records Troubleshooting skills Talent for organizing classes and teaching equipment and spaces Basic training in operating laboratory equipment (water chemistry, microbiology) Experience with teaching undergraduate laboratory classes and working in a team with graduate student TAs About the Department The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering resides within the College of Science & Engineering.
